M44 Question
Is the M44 that I see so cheap everywhere the same as the Mosin-Nagant 7.62 and/or Russian 7.62? I was looking at stocks at Richards Micro-Fit, and both those were listed...thikin about gettin an M44 for a deer rifle, but those stocks leave A LOT to be desired in my opinion, and Richard's stocks are absolutely beautiful...thanks!

Yeah, the M44 is the russian gun. Nice little carbines, but do note that if you put it in another stock, and perhaps take off the bayonet, it is likely to shoot to the left as they were sighted for bayonets extended; a sight adjustment or scope would fix this. There are, however, Hungarian, Polish, etc M44s, some of which have very nice stocks.

1. buy a RUSSIAN or CCCP / USSR gun
2. get an "TULA" or "IZHEVSK" arsenal piece
3. if you are going to order the gun pay the few extra bucks and get the "HAND SELECT" option.
4. try for an all numbers matching gun. avoid "lined out" and "re-numbered" guns
5. try for a pre-1945 production piece
6. check the bore, muzzle, and chamber for wear
7. there are synthetic and wood "sporter" stocks available, some right hear on GB.
8. BROWNELLS offers a "match" trigger upgrade, and scope mounts

But they're all the same action, correct? I just mean the design of the stock...I personally think they're, well, ugly...but the price is right, both for the gun and the ammo..

the RUSSIAN / CCCP / USSR made M-44 carbines are better, higher in quality than the polish, hungarian, chinese, etc...
REMINGTON, WESTINGHOUSE, HARRINGTON and RICHARDSON all made MOSIN-NAGANT rifles, all of superb quality, but they are scarce and pricey.

All Mosin Nagants have the same action, that is bolt system... the M44 is one of the later models to be sure, but mechanically is the same gun that was introduced in 1891.... and some are still in use in third world nations today.

Shoey keep in mind that the Mosin Nagant is a tough rifle to put a scope on. The better method is to use a side mounting system. These systems are bulky, ugly and heavy. If a scoped hunting rifle is what you want then you would probably be better off useing any comercial or Mauser 98. If you are happy with iron sight then go for it. I believe that their are some drop in synthetic stocks available for it also. Cheaper the Dirt and Natchez advertise them. 0 -
thanks...I saw a scout style mount on one in one of the auctions...looked effective, but we'll see...will be a little while before I buy anything, just investigating for now!

I'll have to disagree with MrMike in one small respect. I have/had several M-44's and while the Russians are generally the best I think an excellent condition Polish M-44 is hard to beat. The Poles seemed to take a lot of pride in whatever they made pre and post WWII. I have a scout mounted Polish M-44 that was bought unissued for $150 that will shoot sub 1 minute with most ammo I put through it. The machining and overall quality are exemplary and on a par with any Russian produced gun I have ever seen. Just a small point but thought I should stick up for the Poles on this one.
P.S. The Polish TT-33 I have is really impressive as well and looks about as good as any Russian one i've shot as well!

i simply think that the RUSSIAN recievers, and complete guns are better. the FINNISH guns are also superb, but much more expensive. i am just making a recomendation on wich gun / type / arsenal / year / configuration (in my opinion) is the best buy for the hard earned dollar. i stand by my post. best regards, mike.
