Questions on shipping firearms
The last time I had to ship a firearm was about 8 years ago. I am sure that some of the "rules" have changed, and would appreciate some advice.
This is not a purchase/sale, and does not involve any FFL issues...I need to return a pistol for some factory repair work.
Is there any advantage to using US Postal,or FedEX, or other companies? I am trying to minimize any hassles here. Is it wise or necessary to disclose the true contents of the package? It would really be a major disappointment if this particular pistol was stolen. Any other suggestions or advice are welcomed.

If you don't have a dealer ffl then you can't mail it by US Postal Service. You can ship by Fed Ex or UPS but must declare that it is a firearm but don't mark on the carton that it is a firearm. Fed Ex and UPS are expensive and you may be money ahead to pay a ffl dealer to ship it by US Postal Service. I received a pistol by Fed Ex that came from Ohio to Arkansas. The shipping charge was $28.00. 0 -
If you don't have a FFL ( 01), you can't ship a handgun through the USPS.
I personally ship using FedEx, I've had much better luck with them then UPS ( if it's BROWN, flush it ).
You are required by federal law to tell them that you're shiping a handgun. This will require priority overnight shiping, to prevent theft, etc. Figure with insurance it's going to run you between $30 & $45.

He is not required to inform the shipper that the package contains a firearm since he is shipping to an FFL holder. However, if he doesn't, any insurance claims might be denied. Is it worth the risk? That's for the individual to decide.0 -
UPS has a policy that all hand guns must be sent over night. This increases the cost of shipping a hand gun through them. I have had alot of hassel from UPS in the shipping of both hand guns and long guns. I stoped using them and went to FedEx. I do not ship that often but UPS has convinced me they do not want my business. My 2 cents. [8D]

You can legally ship a long gun through the USPS ( as long as your shipping to a FFL or back to the manufacturer for repair ).
Best luck I've had, with shiping rifles is by Priority Mail.0 -
Best way is to use the method preferred by the Manufacturer that you are shipping to. As your coordinating whatever work is going to be done get their directions on shipping.
I've not experienced it first hand, but I have heard it mentioned in a couple different settings that some mfg. are starting to issue pickup kits ... where they send out the packaging material and issue a pickup request to the carrier. If this is true that sure would be nice for non-FFL holders.
Of course as mentioned above ... if you are not an FFL, but, know one that will ship it for you the costs can be lower. A lot of FFL's will take care of it for $10 or so and they use USPS Priority Mail with insurance, etc. which is nominally $15 so you can save youself a few dollars.
If you only have time to do two things so-so, or one thing well ... do the one thing!0 -

I tryed this with a local FFL, where I use to live.
He told me he would ship it through the USPS for me, "BUT" he had to run it through his books and would charge me a transfer fee for doing this. By the time he got through adding everything up, it was costing me virtually the same as FedEx. So I told him to forget it.0 -
