Gun Safe recommendations
Price range, 300 to 500 dollars. Fireproof preferred but not a must.

You're only hope of a fireproof gun safe in that range would be a used one. Don't usually see them less than $700. I have a Browning Bridger (not fire rated) series that I bought new for about $550. Shopped around for a while and it was the best quality I found. Nothing else was close as far as I was concerned. You can check them out on Browning's website.

Check out Sentry safes at Walmart. They may not be available until hunting season. I have 2. One is for ammo and the other is for mags, optics, and miss. stuff. My big safe was getting full. Your are are going to hear that phrase a lot! These safes are around $400. hold around 6 or 7 long guns (they claim 10 I think but all the safe mfgr's are way optomistic) and a few hand guns. For the money I think they are hard to beat.

redice has a reasonable suggestion. I have one of those also. Did I mention running out of room?! It depends on why you want a safe. The Homak (probably available at Walmart, K-mart, and sporting goods stores) is what I call a gun cabinet. It's sheetmetal and will do you a good job if you are trying to keep a family of 2-6 year olds from having access to your stuff. You and I could break into one. Again, it depends on what you expect from your storage container.

I don't know what part of the country you are in but in Colorado and Texas they have Sam's Wholesale club. They are associated with the Wal-Mart group, anyway I bought a safe there, 22 gun, fully fire proof etc. for $699.00. A little more than what you are talking about but well worth it. Nice looking too, glossy metal flake green with the Winchester logo and rider in gold on the front, also that 5 handle latch on the front. It's way too small for me so only the pricey stuff goes in, next one will be just a frame and safe door and I'll build it into the next house with a 10x16 concrete room. 0 -
I have a couple of those sentry safes and they are very reasonably priced "real" gun safes, and small enough to fit in a corner of the closet 0 -
Besides the other above good suggestions, check your local mega home center. One here in the Midwest (Menard's) showed up with some that
weren't too bad looking. Check also with farm eqipment manufacturers

Had a Sentry, 350.00. Good safe, a little low on fire, but fairly secure. Bought a Browning Gold line at the local Outdoor Show. Immediately sold the Sentry for 300.00. I was happy with the Sentry until it got too small. LOVE THE BROWNING.

At that price point there are not a lot of options. I would suggest a good used safe. I used to own a large Locksmithing company and I can tell you in a safe you get what you pay for. I have been called to drill open more Sentry products safes then any other. They are really junky and easy to defeat. I have even pealed open a few when the lock mech. had a catastrophic failure, well that and the owner butchered the job before calling me. What is it they say "it will cost you double if you worked on it yourself" LOL. Just my two cents after ten years in the business. By the way things you want to look for in a quality safe are a re-locker and a good quality mech. like S&G (Sargent & Greenleaf) as well as 1/4 inch or better hard steel plate. Most people do not realise this but fire safes are really nothing more then a safe with a filling of either cemet or cement board between the outer and inner skins of the safe. Cement is a wounderful insulator. Fire rating also varies with door seals and the like. The best way to evaluate a safe is based on its UL Rating TL-15 or TL-30 are a good start. Safes are rated by UL for both fire and burglary. If you are more worried about unauthorized access rather then theft a cheap Homack Gun Cabinet will be good enough, just make sure you anchor it well. Well two cents turned into five but such is life. If I can be of any more help give me a shout.
