Winchester M-86 .33 caliber

This appears to be very late '86 (marked Model 86 rather than 1886)- has slim barrel with ramp front sight and hood like an M-71, short magazine and shotgun butt. I know it has been refinished (very pro job though!) but oddly it has a M-71 Deluxe style forearm (checkered although the butt isn't) that exactly matches the color and grain of the buttstock. The bore is mirror perfect and the action is slick as glass- very pretty gun. Anybody know when this was made approx?
Gun is solid frame, BTW.
Serial# is: 154812A

    Hello jakelin...

    Winchester dropped the "18" and "19" off of all their various Model names in early 1918. Your Model 86 was most likley manufactured circa 1918/1919, and it is referred to as an "Extra Lightweight" Rifle. Most of them were also Takedowns.

    beware...
    the prices of these guns...1886 take down and light wieght carbines in .33 WINCHESTER have skyrocketed in the last 18 months. we damn near had a heart attack when we checked the BLUE BOOK and other price guides on my dads gun. his has factory case hardening (documented in a factory letter) after winchester stopped applying this finish, exept as a special order.

    amazing gun, overbuilt, accuratte, flawless.

    the recent onset in popularity of CAS and SASS has caused a sharp spike in demand and increase in value on these guns. even the shot out, poor basket cases are being grabbed up. add at least 10% to any book value to reflect the current market.

    .33 win brass and ammo is not impossible to find, and can be made from sizing and necking down .45-70 cases. stick with the 180gr, 185 gr, or 200 gr bullet wieghts.

    Bert, on an M1 rifle post a while back Jakelin used the term "near worthless FRN". Now I happen to know my way around the M1 service rifle pretty well and have answered hundreds of questions here on Gun Broker- man addressed to me personally-- dealing with the M1 service rifle but had never heard FRN before. I posted back to Jakelin asking what FRN meant and instead of simply telling me that it stood for Federal Reserve Note I was told that since I did not know this tid-bit of information I should return to grade school! Well I am a gun dealer and not a banker, but I do know what the Federal Reserve is as well a Federal Reserve Note, although I was not familiar with the use of the FRN abreviation. The most importent thing when posting information is to match your target audience with your use of terms and on a gun based web site many financial abbreviations may draw a blank with our membership. Being a fair man I think that any question asked by Jakelin from this point on should be greeted with my own personal invitation for him to brush up on his remedial education. Personally I hope he hangs around here for years posting at least a question each day because I intend to enjoy this to the fullest!

    Appology accepted so lets move on. I did feel however that Bert was due an explanation from me for a change in my typical "matter of fact responce" to questions. Being talked down to is not something I am used to around here but I should have been able to take it in my stride...and I actually did learn something!     Well maybe you ought to come down off your high horse then. I have been in the firearms game myself going on 43 years now- I am always learning something new from someone expert, beginner, layman, whatever... One thing I have learned is that the so called "experts" are more often wrong than they are ever right.

    jakelin...I don't have a dog in this fight, but I'll tell you that your response to Mark on that entire FRN thing was crass and way out of line. As far as remedial education is concerned you might brush up a little on your spelling of "sincerly" before you cast stones at others. You might not feel you owe him an apology...little men seldom do. A big man swallows his pride and apologises when he knows he was wrong.
