mini-14 : accuracy found as stated

I bought a couple of Ruger Mini-14's when they came out...the blue one is still NIB, the stainless one rides a lot.

Yes, I was not pleased with the 100yd + accuracy. I have a great scope on the wrong gun.

My question... is there any reasonable improvement in accuracy possible. One of the smith's in town claims he can refit a barrel, square and fit a few things for a tack driver. The other smith I went to said he would not do it.

    You Ruger Mini14 has full factory warranty with Ruger for life, except burnt out barrels & abuse.
    As long as it has not been modified or touched by a gunsmith!
    About the best you can expect from a standard mini-14 is 4"-6" groups with the proper ammo at 100yds.
    The standard Mini14 was never meant to be a "Tack Driver".
    IMHO I would not modify the gun, go buy something that will produce the accuracy you require.

    Iff you do not mind loosing the warranty there are several gunsmiths that work only on Ruger Mini 14 rifles. They will give you a warranty on there work. For the price you would pay to have the modifications done on your mini 14 you could purchase a better rifle. Better meaning more accurate. My 2 cents [8D]

    You can do quite a few things yourself for under $100 that will imporve accuracy. The easiest and quickest are to install a muzzle brake and put it into a Houge overmold stock. You can bed (if you do it yourself) and install a smaller gas bushing and op rod recoil pads as well. These 4-5 things has in some cases brought groups to 1.5-2" @ 100. It got me to about 3" groups @ 100. If you want more you have to replace the barrell with a heavier one, bed it, and put in a beefier gas block assembly. Cost of $500 + after your all said and done. Go buy an AR, save yourself the hassle if you want it to be better then a 2" rifle.
