BIG GAME REVOLVER
Can anyone tell me what the best big game revolver on the market is?? Along the lines of price, quality, and best bang for the buck. Scope or open sights?? Like to hunt deer with one! Thanks

There will be a lot of differing opinions coming your way (for sure) but I say that you can't go wrong with an S&W Model 629, which is chambered for the .44 Magnum. The 629 Classic is avialble with either 5", 6-1/2", and 8-3/8" full lug barrels, Hogue grips, is drilled and tapped for scope mounting and should serve you well in the field. Retail pricing is around $800.

I'm voting for the Magnum Research BFR. The Smith would be a close second for me but the .44 Magnum is marginal for deer in my neck of the woods (big deer in the upper midwest). The S&W is surely a whole lot of gun and will more than do the job plus I love S&W's anyway! The reason I give the nod to the BFR ($1000 or so) is the choice of calibers it offers. Amongst others it comes in 444 Markin and the venerable 45-70...both plenty of gun for deer! As far as optics go a 3x hangun scope or Reddot sight would be excellent choices both. I think that open sights are fine but would personally go for an optical edge to help for shot placement!

If you are asking for "the best", I'd have to say "Freedom Arms".... http://www.freedomarms.com/ ....considerably more pricey than the average revolver, but the tolerances and machine work are unmatched. If money is no object...go for it.
I carry a S&W Performance Center .44 with open sights for deer. Most of my handgun shots are less than 100yds. Scopes tend to make a bulky carry and holsters resemble rifle scabbards.0 -
depends on the size of the deer you are hunting and how far you plan on shooting them , any of the many Smith and Wesson , from the 357mag up to the new 500S&W, with Ruger you have New Model Blackhawks , Super Blackhawks , Redhawks, Super Redhawks, in cals. from 357 mag up to the 480 Ruger ,,, one of the ones I like in the Ruger line up is their Super Blackhawk Hunter , comes in 41mag , 44mag and 45 lc , stailess steel , 7 1/2" barrel with adjustable sights and also Ruger scope rings all for just under $500 0 -
Hello: I just finished test firing a Smith & Wesson 629 Light Hunter in 44 mag. from the Smith Custom Shop. Tuned, ported, Hogue, and hard wood grips. Probably the smoothest double action 44 I've ever fired. List on the pistol is $1150.00; but they are selling on Gun Broker, and through Smith dealers for $850.00 to $900.00 (including tax). 7 1/2" barrel in a satin finish. It is set up for scope mounting, but we were shooting bowling pins off hand at 75 yards plus open sited. You can buy a regular 629 and have all of the work done, but I think your probably money ahead with this pistol. Go ahead and buy the 500 if you want, (the ballistics on them are staggering); but if you want a pistol you can shoot, and kill deer, this would be my choice. 0 -
I have both the Ruger and the S&W in 357 and 44Mag. They are both nice guns. I also have a BFR in 45/70. This is what I would use. They have them in both the 7 1/2 in barrel and 10" barrel. The recoil is acceptable. It is actually a pleasure to shoot. It is heavy, but well made to exact tolerences. All Stainless.

Looking at effective,yet affordable, my money goes to the Ruger Blackhawk.41Mag, 45 Long Colt, are sufficient for most deer hunting applications.
As for sights, I would opt for a scope, if only to help to insure a clean and humane kill.0
