PYTHON: Hard spot in cylinder rotation(Cause?)?
COLT PYTHON PROBLEM: When the cylinder in open(And you rotate it by hand 360 degrees)it rotates smoothly, until you reach a hard spot(Which is approximately, between 1 and 2-1/2 cylinder holes)and, it takes extra force, to continue rotating the cylinder past this point, by hand. The cylinder, gets "Normally" easy(After this point is passed(But, gets hard again, at the same place, on every rotation)? NOTE: This Python, has only lightly, been fired! It is primarily, a display gun! I tried lubing the cylinder axle(Without solving this problem)! What are some other things to check(Or, what ideas, might anyone have, on how to correct this problem?)? What are the common reasons, for the cause of this problem? Is this a simple "Fix" or complicated? Explain your answers, please?

I had a piece of unburnt powder get into the ejector rod area once and it caused the cylinder to be a little sluggish at one point. I think A thourough cleaning is in order. Also on a smith one time I had a piece of the primer get in the same area. If you are good with your hands take it apart and clean it, or go to your local gun shop and have them look at it for you.

Try a feeler gage between the cylinder face and rear of barrel at that point. Use empty cases in the chambers. If It's tighter at that point, the face of the cylinder is running out and needs to be stoned to have an equal gap all around. 0 -
BTW why are you dry firing it? Not that theres anything wrong with it, it's just that it will leave a ring on the cylinder as if it had been fired more than it actually was.

1)What are the necessary steps, to enable removing the cylinder, to inspect for burnt powder(Or whatevr?)that could be causing the hard spot, in the cylinder? How difficult is this(As this is my first, Python!)? Please explain?
2)STONING THE CYLINDER(If needed?): Are you referring to just in the center of cylinder(Just around the axle hole/)or? Please explain?
3)DRY FIRING: No, I did not indicate that I was dry firing my Python! I opened the cylinder and was turning the cylinder by hand, when I noticed the aforementioned(In my original posting)rotational, cylinder hard spot. I just bought this gun, and was just lightly cleaning and lubricating it.0 -

back of barrel=square, or Cyl. face not square,etc.

Lower front of frame is a screw. Back it out halfway then open cylinder and it will exit the frame forward with the crane. Push extractor to the rear and inspect for powder granules under the extractor. Also slide out the crane & check for grains.
Look at the ratchet for burrs that could push the cylinder forward.
If the binding is as you say only at one or two chambers, it is likely the cylinder face is not running true.
DO NOT stone around the axle. It will increase headspace.
Check the gap between each chamber and the rear of the barrel with a feeler gage. If it's tight only at one or two chambers then you have to carefully stone the face of the cylinder at those chambers. All chambers should have the same clearance from the end of the barrel.
Use a felt tip marking pen on the front face of the cylinder. Let it dry. Where the black is rubbed off is where you have to stone.
Go slowly and repeat the process until all chambers have the same clearance from the barrel.
I ran into this when fitting a new barrel to a 1903 Colt New Service.
The problem was not noticeable with the original,large cylinder gap but when rebarrelling to a minimum gap the same binding condition came up.

I appreciate all of the information, that you have given me! However, before I proceed, I need to clarify, my original posting! When I noticed the hard place(While rotating the cylinder)this was done, with the cylinder swung out of the frame! So, the cylinder, was just being rotated(About it's axis)on the crane axle, itself! My definition of the cylinder having a hard spot(Upon rotation)within 1-2-1/2 cylinder holes, was just in reference, to that amount of distance, that the hard rotation was felt(Before the force to rotate the cylinder, became "Normally" easy, again)! And, upon rotating the cylinder(Again, with the cylinder, swung out of the frame!)each and every time around, the same hard spot is reached(And, the same situation, occurs, over and over again)! That said, I want to add the following questions:
1)Is the screw(To be backed out half way, to allow the removal of the cylinder & crane together)located on the very front of the frame(Or, on one side of the frame?)?
2)How far does the screw need to be backed out, to represent the half way screwed out, position?
3)Once the cylinder & crane(Are out of the frame)will the cylinder, just slide off of the crane(Or, does something have to be removed first, to enable the removal of the cylinder?)?
4)Based on the above, if there is any other ideas(Or, suggestions)that might lead me to the solution, of my hard rotating cylinder, I'll certainly, appreciate getting this additional, information? I'm very new to Python's(And, to Colt revolvers)! Thanks!

sir, i would consider sending the gun back to colt, if it`s a mechanical defect they will most likely fix it at no charge. even if they charge you it will be less than if you try to repair it yourself and damage something.contact them and they will send you ship instructions. i suspect that the crane might be bent which is sometimes caused by someone slapping the cyl shut{like in the movies} never do that and instruct any one you show the gun not to do it.

Mr. High;
open the cylinder, unload, hold gun horizontal with right side up & cylinder down. look for air gap between cylinder & frame (they should be parallel & not touching. rotate the cylinder & see if it is rubbing on the cylinder stop (the boss on the frame at the rear of the cylinder). if the tight spot is caused by contact as noted above, return your gun to Colt. if there is no outside contact between cylinder & frame or stop, continue with disassembly & cleaning.
your colt should have a screw on the right side of frame above the trigger guard. remove it & under it will be a small spring & detent pin. with these removed the crane & cylinder assy. will slide out foreward.
the ejector rod (with the knurled end) will unscrew from the ejector & enable you to seperate the cylinder & crane (there is a spring between the crane & cylinder, careful not to distort it).
clean all parts & lightly lube, reassemble in reverse order.

OK, the description of the problem has now changed so forget my last recommendations.
I assume the joint between the crane and frame shows no gap at all and in closing the cylinder it closes without forcing either the cylinder or the thumb latch.
Easiest is to degrease the side of the ratchet and blacken the side of the ratchet with black marker and let it dry. If it rubs off at the chamber positions indicated, the crane is slightly bent.
On the lower right side perhaps 1" from the front of the frame is a screw with a captive pin. The pin rides in a groove in the crane to keep it from falling out when the cylinder is opened. You can unscrew it partly out till it releases the crane or take it completely out, The cylinder and crane can now slide forward and out of the gun. Align a cylinder groove with the base of the crane so you dont scratch the frame while sliding the cylinder forward.
With the cyl and crane out you inspect it for debris and see if the ejector rod is bent and binding inside the crane. The rod could have bent while driving out a tight case.0
