Cleaning Kit Thread Size
I have an older Outers rifle cleaning kit (possibly a .22, but not sure), a newer Outers .22 pistol cleaning kit, and an older outers .357 Mag pistol cleaning kit. It appears that the older rifle kit and the .22 pistol kit are threaded for the same size brushes and tools, but the .357 Mag is apparently a larger thread size.
I just bought a Marlin 1894c in .357 Mag and decided to clean it this weekend. I bought a Hoppes .357 Mag brush and then figured I would just use the older rifle kit, but it is the wrong thread size! At first I thought it was a Hoppes vs. Outers thing, but then I tried the brush on my Outers .357 pistol kit and it works!
So what is the logic here? Are the different thread sizes based on caliber? Or does it have to do with rifle vs. pistol? Is there a converter rod from the small thread size to the larger thread size or do I have to buy a specific .357 Mag rifle cleaning kit? I really don't want to spend another $10 - $15 on a new kit.

357 is 357. Was the hoppes .357 brush smaller or larger than the barrel of the marlin? 0 -
The brush would have fit just fine, I'm talking about the thread that screws into the cleaning rod.

Ah! My bad, as da bro's would say. Unfortunately, there is no standard for those kinds of items. I have a cleaning rod that fits my .22 brush, but the rod wont fit into the barrel. I use another rod and the same brush, works like a charm, only difference between the two is millimeters. 0 -
Most "NEW" cleaning kits now come with thread size all the same. In the pass everyone wanted to make you buy replacement parts from them . like sony beta max and vcr now standard vcr type.Karl 0 -
I think at one time there were as many as four (or more) thread size and pitch combinations. That was designed to get you to stay faithful to brand. I think it's down to two popular and one more.
Yes, there are thread adapter extensions. I think Kleen Bore has them, maybe Dewey and I think even Hoppe's. Check a local complete gun store or www.midwayusa.com, www.cabelas.com0
