Firearm cleaning solvent advice
I'm looking for a good quality firearm solvent that doesn't stink up the place. I've used Hopps, Remington bore cleaner, etc, but they smell to high heaven and my wife is riding me something fierce - not really, but every time I clean my weapons the whole house does reek! Any advice on a low odor, or pleasant smelling solvent would be appreciated.

In my experience Blue Wonder has a strong Ammonia smell, your better half wouldn't be happy with it.
The most benign of the lubricants/solvents, that I have used are the Tetra products. Brownells, www.brownells.com carries them.0 -
Thanks for the suggestion. I'll give Blue Wonder a try. If it smells like ammona, maybe wife will think I'm cleaning the house! I still welcome any other suggestions on this topic, thanks, Ben 0 -
Blue Wonder is my first choice, and while it does have an ammonia oder, unlike rufe, I don't find it strong. My sense of smell may not be great. Second choice for me is Butch's Bore Shine, also with an ammonia smell for the copper.

I always use G96. It is a 3 in 1 product (cleans, Lubes, and protects). You can spray it on the entire gun including the wood with out any damage. And the kicker is it actually smells GOOD. 0 -
I took some HOPPE'S No. 9 35 years ago put it in fancy bottle gave it to my best girl for valentine's day when she said she liked the smell I asked her to marry me been together ever since If you don't like the smell of No. 9 you must eat QUICHE for lunch. 0 -

Try using G.I. Bore Cleaner.
After a couple of sessions of using that, your better half will beg you to go back to Hoppe's #9! [:D]

Try EEZOX, it has a odor but it is not unpleasant and makes each succesive cleaning easier. Not to mention it is the best damn rust preventative I have ever seen. I have been using this product for over ten years and love it. For those of you who own or use Glock's you wil be amazed at how it makes the gun look like new, even after hard use. I use other solvents sometimes but I always finnish with a good light coat of EEZOX. Just my two cents.

I'm in the same boat . I just toss out all the oily ,used swatches and open the window for a while and it goes away fast . If it smells like amonia it probably is amonia . 0 -
You have to use the solvent that fits the job.
Some jobs require an ammonia smell, some jobs require another smell.
The solution to your problem is obvious...... You need your own space for cleaning guns.....one that is separate from the common spaces of the house.
I have a woodstove if I need heat, a fan for cooling, a small refrigerator, the old microwave, the old TV(but no cable),a hose outside for water, some bushes out back for bodily functions, and no telephone. My camping equipment is there too...so I guess I have a cot and sleeping bags.
SO, you can see the sacrifice I have made for my wife's happiness. You should be the considerate, loving, lifemate she wants and get started on your space...so that she will be comfortable.
