Smooth bore Webley .455?

I have examined a 1917 dated Webley Mk VI revolver that had an unusual barrel. It has been smoothbored and a choke attachment added. This looks like some sort of factory produced tube that has been silver soldered to the barrel. Very professional work. Not an amatuer hack job. Total barrel length is 8 3/4 inches. There is a marking on the barrel that I have not seen before. Two broad arrow marks pointing to each other. Looks like an * . I recall that some countries have tried gun control laws that would allow a smooth bore gun but not a rifled one. I'm wondering if this might be the result of such a law. And, since this could pre date the NFA is it legal? Is there a grandfather clause for such items? I know they exempt several short barreled rifles, stocked pistols and other NFA covered items of collector interest.

    " The broad arrow marks pointing to each other " denote that the firearm has been removed from the British War Department inventory, and could be sold on/to the civilian market.

    I don't know what the legalities of the Webley that has been altered to a shotgun are? Since the barrel is removeable, ( at the hinge ) I suggest that you get a spare from one of the spare parts suppliers. Also be very circumspect in your inquiries, or risk a early morning wake up call, from the jack booted thugs.

    I came across some British War Departmant documents while doing some other research & some Mk.VI's were either altered to Smoothe Bore or Special Ordered in order to take down Imperial German Carrier Pigeons.

    I take it none of those War Office fellows ever tried to shoot a pigeon. They are very fast and present a tough target with a shotgun. Trying to shoot one down with a smooth bore revolver is unimaginable to me.
