i have a romanian wasr-10. and i am interested in installing a synthetic stock, but i cannot get the old wood stock off the gun, removing the two screws doesnt seem to do anything. is there any way to get the stock off without damaging the gun or the stock? i was thinking i would freeze the whole gun, since the wood would shrink more than the metal, letting me remove it. but this might be a bad idea since the stock probably still has moisture in it and would crack. any ideas on how to get the stock off would be apprecieated

Once you have both screws removed put the receiver into a padded vise and then with the palm of you hand hit all sides of the stock with your hand. The stock will become loose and then drop right out. You can also use a rubber mallet but you may damage the stock with that. If you don't have a vice, grab the rifle by the forearm and bang the stock on a carpeted or padded rug. You may need to bang all sides and top/bottom of the stock to get it off.
Don't try the screw driver method, you'll scratch the stock like I did mine before I learned the above trick.

Freezing will not hurt the metal or wood. I have shot AKs at 30 below and never had a stock crack.

I replaced an east German plastic stock with wood because I thought it looked better, and I almost didn't get the stock off! I finally cut it off with a bandsaw, and used a dremel to cut the stub out with. And yes, the wood does look better[ to me anyway ]. 0 -
and if i want to put the wood one back on, will it fight tight or wobble? 0 -
I have a Romanian made AK too and I didn't have any problem getting the stock out. I know they're all different though. I was wondering if you had trouble with anything else? I had A LOT of trouble at first getting the wood cover off the gas tube. I started cutting it off with the dremel but it was taking too long so I got on the internet and found how to do it which was gripping the metal tube with pliers and grabbing the cover with a towel and twisting them BOTH, very hard against eachother, instead of just trying to hold one still. Just offering advice if you haven't got there yet. I wouldn't worry about damaging the wood. I don't think it would cost too much for a new set. Also, don't know what synthetic furniture set you're going with but I bought an awesome, US made one from a company called K-VAR for $100, in olive drab. It makes the gun look awesome and you'd love the hand-guard. 0 -
after i pounded the stock a few times on the stairs it came right out, but, when i was putting it back in it chipped quite bad [:(!], so i used so 18 guage brads and nailed it back on, i just got done sanding and applying a coat of tru-oil. as for my wood on the gas tube, the first time i shot the gun the stupid wood started leaning one way, i guess mine was just too loose, whereas your's was too tight, so i hammered the metal lip that retains the wood, i got it pretty tight and have had no problems, to remove it i just had to wiggle it alot, i did use a rag for extra grip but no pliers. and i got thinking about the synthetic furniture, i dont know if i really like it, it kinda ruins the image of the AK-47, makes it look almost modern. i think ill stick with the wood.
does anyone know if it would be safe to shoot my ak with the stock off? i should think that it wouldent hurt it but i figured i should ask. and what about legality, the weapon is very very short now but it just looks soo good i want to keep it without a stock but dont really want to violate any laws.0 -
what kind of wood did your romanian ak come with? ive seen alot of them with those ugly dragunov thumbholes. but mine came with the pistol grip even though its a WASR-10 and not a SAR-1, and what is the difference between the WASR and the SAR? the stock on my WASR appeared to have no finish at all on it, teh handguards had a finish but i redid all the wood with tru-oil and i think it looks quite nice. 0 -

I have to agree with Vess, I also have the OD green K-var stocks on my Sar1 and it looks good. Also the http://www.k-var.com US made stocks have a much larger heat shield in the forearm that greatly aids in reducing the barrel heat to you hands during /after rapid fire.
Did I mention I've been jonesin to buy another Romanian?
