Mini 14 in .223

After some consideration, and mind you this will be some months down the road, I have decided to pick up a Ruger Mini 14 for my not-oh-so-expensive .223 semi auto that I asked about a few days back. I'm not much a fan of stainless finishes, and have seen wildly varying prices on gb, anyone know what the MSRP NIB for a blued basic model is? Thanks.

    Whoooeee... never mind I just checked Ruger's websight and close to $700 is more than I wanna spend... but if I see a nice used one in the $400 range I might bite.

    $700 is MSRP, suggested retail price...no one ever pays that! You can pick up a new Mini 14, blue, wood stock for about $479. YOu should be able to find a decent used one for about $400 but most of the listings here on Gunbroker are for new ones. Check out your local Walmart or local dealer, you should be able to buy a new one for under $500.

    If memory serves me correctly,The local Wally World has one
    at $399.(or maybe it was $499)

    Coulda' bought one in 98% condition w/2 Hi-cap mags at the
    pawn shop last week for $350.

    was just at my local Gander Mountain store last night they had the blued model like you want for $469, the stainless and the Ranch models where all over 500

    I'm sure you have heard this before, but the accuracy of the mini-14 is so-so compared to most of the AR clones. Don't get me wrong, the Ruger is a great weapon for plinking and close-in varmiting, but if you plan to shoot out past a few hundred yards it my disappoint you. A few other point to consider is the hi-cap mags are plentiful and cheap for the AR's but not so for the mini-14. The only hi-cap that function well in the Mini-14 are original Ruger factory mags cost ($100) or PMI mags ($40-60). Depending on your needs, the cost of additional mags can make a $400 Ruger equal to or more expensive than an AR clone. The Mil-spec AR clones also offer far more accessories than are available for the Ruger.

    hughes1 beat me too it. I was going to say, save a little more and go with the AR clone, for the reasons he gave.

    I don't want to open a can of worms here... but I really don't want an AR unless it is a match grade gun.

    I don't care if I have a high cap mag or not, nor will I be shooting beyond 100y with any frequency... so I think the Ruger would be fine. My other choice would be the Saiga.

    It sounds like the Ruger would be a good fit for what you need. It's a handy little rifle and it shoots well enough for the distance you mentioned. As for the Russian Saiga, I would pick the Ruger over the Russian gun simply because of parts availability, and why not buy American if you can.

    Good choice, because you won't have to worry about persnickety gas systems with a Mini- 14, either!

    If this is going to be a "utility" gun I'd suggest that you consider the stainless steel--even if you don't like the "look" you will come to love it's "utility"--especially if you go with the composite stock too!

    With the mini's you realistic need to bring you range in less than 100 yds. Seldom can the shooter out shoot a rifle but the Ruger mini's in general will disappoint you in performance. As mentioned, spending a little more (read $100-150) will put you in a very accurate AR-type rifle. Just on GB, you can pick up a NEW RRA complete lower for around 250 and a complete upper ($300-350) and be way ahead of the game.[;)]
