AK 47 Questions
What is the difference between the 84-s and the 56-s Norincos? Is it just the caliber or are there other differences as well? I was offered a Norinco 56 NIB w/all accessories for 950.00. Is that a fair price? Regular wood stock not a folder. Thanks for the help.

If I can remember correctly (and I generally try to forget about Chicom AKs) the Type 84 was a semiautomatic copy of the Chicom AKM service rifle and was chambered for the .223 cartridge. It was available in something like four variations (wood stock, plastic stock, under-folder, side-folder). The Type 84 was imported for only a very short time before the ban. The Type 56 rifle was more or less a semiautomatic copy of the earlier Chicom AK-47 and was chambered for the usual 7.62X39mm cartridge. We have a semiautomatic AK and SKS expert on out boards named Ira and he may be able to provide more details. My specialty is military Kalasnikovs.

Believe if the serial number has a "56" but does not have a "S" suffex with a hyphened number after it, it's a early Norinco import dating to the mid 80's or earlier.
After the first bunch came in they added the "S" with the number, denoting, wooden stock, plastic stock, folding stock etc.
If it's "NIB", with all the original goodies, I'ld go for it.

The 84S series covers the 5.56mm side folder (84S2), bottom folder (84S1) and wood stock model (84S).
the 56S covers the same guns but in 7.62x39
The bolts and magazines are different. You could not readily convert from one caliber to another.
These are pre ban AKs.
The price sounds good.
I have a 56S2 and an 84S1. Of the two,I prefer the side folder but wish it was in 5.56.
Wood stocked models (S) are better than the S1 underfolders to shoot because you can more easily get in back of the sights.0 -
