8mm mauser ammo.
Anyone know what kind of surplus 8mm mauser ammo is good, and where? Also, dont know much about the grain of the bullet, any input appreciated.

The answer is, whatever functions best in your gun. For instance, some people swear by turkish mauser ammo with the 156gr bullet, others say it is junk. Romanian and German are, in MY opinion best, both with a 200 gr bullet. Romanian can be had at www.aimsurplus.com and turk at www.ammunitionstore.com . Keep in mind the turk is a bit hot and shouldn't be used in semi autos or older 88 style mausers, but is fine in any 98 action. Best, Jon

Bear in mind that virtually all this surplus 7.92x57 ammo will be corrosive primed, requiring thorough cleaning with the appropriate solvents soon after shooting. Your savings must be offset against the time / effort of the cleaning procedures.

What jonk said pretty much summs it up. You can spend as much as you want, or as little. I have been shooting a great deal of the turk lately, If you watch you can buy it for about $.035 per round. The last I bought I paid $55 /case of 1400 rounds then sold the boxes they came in for $20. Is it the best, probably not, but it is the most bang for the buck by far. If you can find non-wartime dates and buy it by the sealed case it seems better. I have had the best luck with 1938 vintage, the stripper clips are better, boxes are nicer(dovetailed rather than screwed), and every single round has gone bang (5000+). If you want hunting ammo buy your ammo from one of the foreign Mfgs(S&B, Norma)as they load ammo to the true potential of the cartridge, not what their liability lawyers tell them to(as remington, winchester and federal do).

I would buy a little of each and try it for accuracy. A lot depends on the twist rate of your barrel. I don't have a vz-24, so I don't know what weight bullet will work best. I have a Spanish 98 and a Turkish mauser that like the lighter Turkish ammo. I have a Yugo 48 that does better with the heavier bullets. 0 -
I see that the German rounds have steel casing, and the Turks are brass. What would the differences be here? 0 -

Icono, the only "special solvent" needed for cleaning firearms that have had corrosive ammo fired through them is mild soapy water. The water netrualizes the salts in the corrosive residue. One should then clean the firearm as one would coventionally.

Some german rounds have steel, some have brass. No difference in function though theoretically brass should feed and extract easier and leave less residue then a lacquered steel case... but for a bolt action no real difference, unless you reload which isn't a factor here for several reasons I'm not going into unless you want to know.

ISP, of course soap and water do the trick (I said "appropriate," didn't I? [;)]) . . . but I was taught to "strip the action if you shoot corrosive primed ammo" and I really prefer not to go to the extra work, but shoot NC primed rounds. 'Course, if I had thing for 7.92x57, *perhaps* I would be willing to do this to enjoy such savings . . . don't think so, though.
