Your question is complicated by the fact that their is (2) generation of pistols with the Auto-Ordnance name.
First, Dating from the late 1980's to late 1990's were sold by Gun Parts Corp. From my personal experience, the workmanship used to assemble these pistols was sorely lacking and inconsistent. Although the steel the pistol parts were made from, appeared durable.
Second, In the late 90's Gun Parts sold out the Auto-Ordnance operation to Kahr Arms makers of the Kahr family of pistols. I haven't had any personal experience these, and have heard mixed reports about them. Although any improvement in workmanship would make them better then the earlier pistols I worked on.0 -

Yes, you can pay what I call 'big bucks' for some 1911's. Some folks add on a bunch of stuff that improves nothing. Add what improves YOUR shooting.... But sights are pretty fundamental. I do not have adjustable sights on any of my 1911's, but I have painted the '3 dot' styling on them. Once I find the ammo preference and drift the sights, I have no need to adjust them again.
There is no crime in buying a 'cheap' 1911 to fiddle with, as long as it is safe to fire. My son has a standard size Firestorm that cost $ 180. Feedback on that gun will be mixed.... but he is happy with it. After over 1500 rounds it still feeds reliably and groups fairly well. It is beginning to feel a little 'loose' to me, and may not stand up to continued heavy use. But, the fact remains that he has $ 180 invested in something that has not failed him, while I weigh in at about $ 450.

I have Auto-ordances compatiton model from 95 or 96, haven't had one problem with it. The fit and finish are good. Paid 400$ for it and don't regret it. My 2 cents. 0 -
They are soft get someone to check rockwell hardness . What does this mean ? not mutch if you shoot 100 rounds a year but if you shoot lots it will loosen up. go with springfield or kimber colt les baer 0 -

I think we've been here before...but look at the Eaa Witness 45's. Granted, not a 1911 type but they are very well made and offer a choice a DA/SA or DAO in addition to a decocker. No question as to the quality of the steel used from what I've heard. The Rock Island Armory gun is, I believe, made in the Phillipines...having said that, it is a fairly good copy of the 1911A1 and I have heard few disparaging things except for the "Made in the Phillipines" thing.

Yes , true on most above accounts ...We had a lot of problems with the earlier versions of the auto ord. 45's , quality control was Not in there routine ...the newer ones (Kahr?) are supposed to be better??
may want to consider the rock island , dan wesson and a few others in that price range ...one thing to check out , make sure they are true 1911 style and parts will interchange (some out there do Not!), if you want to or can , spend more $$$ , then it is a limitless field of selection ...Good Luck !!!!!
