any savage 340 owners?
i've been considering a savage 340 in .222 remington, mainly because of their low price but am wondering how these rifles shoot.

i've had a few of these in my shop. reblue jobs,etc. nothing major.the only thing that i really don't like is the side mount scope,but that is just my opinion. good shooters. 0 -
We echo 260's sentiments , the side mount is a PITA but they are decent shooters. You shouldnt pay anymore than $200 for a decent one though.

I have one and a Stevens 325, both are 30-30. I use the iron sights and have never tried to mount a scope. They are neat rifles. I am not a gunsmith, but I have to agree with the comments made by the others.

With the help of a GB Forum/Want Ads reader(Thanks again Terry) I just finished buying the last of the seies of 340's...a really nice one in 225 Winchester. All of mine are equiped with the Savage factory side mount and I personally have had no real problems with them. The real limitation to the side mount is the distance between the 'rings'. It will limit you to a scope that has a fairly small turret but if you are going to mount a vintage scope the Weavers and Redfields mostly seem to be of appropriate eye relief and size.
These are indeed inexpensive rifles but seem to be coming up in price as people seem to be catching on! They are not, and were never intended to be, competition for a Winchester 70 or other such higher end rifles! They were and are utilitarian little rifles that give a lot of bang for the buck. This is a nice rifle for the 30-30 round as if you hand load you can use spitzer type bullets and the accuracy increases noticably. The 222 I have is a nice little shooter and with the old Lyman 4x I have on it is capable of "1 1/2 groups at 100 yds. using Sierra 45 gr. spire points. The 30-30 is also a good shooter that gets under "2 using a Weaver 4x ; try that with your $200 lever gun! You might beat that kind of accuracy with a lever gun but I kinda' doubt it for the money! The 225 Winchester is so new I have not had it out yet but I expect pretty good things from it...it is fitted with a Weaver V9 and is by far the prettiest of the 4! The real gem of all 4 so far is the 342 in 22 Hornet. It is Savage factory side mounted as are the rest and has a cheap Ted Williams 4x. Nice checkered stock and near 100% condition with a mint barrel. This gun, on a windless day, will hit under a half inch at 50 yds. and just under an inch ("7/8) at 100 yds.!!! Like most hornets it won't handle anything over 40 grains very well but with that kind of accuracy, who cares! Inside of 100 yds. it is pure hell on varmint size game!
To be honest, the only fault I can find with these rifles is the wood. You have to watch for stock splits and be sure to ask about that up front! My 222 is glued but with that kind of recoil I don't think it warrants much concern. The trigger pull seems to be a bit heavy but good. The bolt is a bit clunky and locks on a single forward lug but seems to be very secure. All in all, I love this inexpensive collection I've built. The most I paid was $300 for the 225 which is quite rare, and the least I paid was $200 for, believe it or not, the Hornet! Pretty tough to go wrong with those results from that kind of investment!! Look it over well but for between $200 and $250 the triple deuce 340 in excellent condition is a great little performer!

Let me know if there is anything else re: the 340's or Savage Sporters you need to know; I've compiled a lot of info over the last few years building the collection and would be more than happy to share any info I have. I have a good deal of load data for the 222 also and feel it should be handloaded to reach its' full potential. I've owned 340's in 222,223, and 30-30. All have been extremely accurate with no problems at all. Over the years I have replaced the old-style stamped steel side mount scope mounts with the newer style two piece aluminum Weaver system. The Weaver system works very well and looks ok, too. Like 1KYDSTR said, the only problem is the limitation of eye relief. I have seen one guy up here at a small gun shop in Canada that made a custom 1 piece top-mount for a 340, but I personally didn't like the 3-screw mounting so I've steered clear of trying it. 0
