Burris scope....
i just received a a-bolt 7mm wsm with a Burris ballistic plex scope. (school does pay off...graduation [:D] ) my question is...what exactly are the 3 hash marks below the center dot. The sales dude told my dad: sight your rifle in for 100 yds. the 3 hash marks meant 150-200-250 yds.
however it looks like they are 100 yd increments. (according to the manual that came with it)?? any help is GREATLY appreciated. thanks in advance.

The dots are in minutes of angle it would all depend on what cartridge you are shooting .Burris does not make one for each cartridge and bullet weight. In other words they would be bigger increments in a 22/250 then in a 45/70 cheers Karl 0 -
Should have been paperwork in the box explaining how they work for about 30 different loads/bullet weights in various calibers. Might be able to get a copy from Burris. They are not in minutes of angle on these scopes. A very basic explanation is this : For non magnum calibers the crosshair is 100yds(zero), the first mark is 200yds, second mark is 300yds, third is 400yds, top of bottom post is 500yds. -- For fast magnums the crosshair is 100 and 200, the first mark is 300, second mark is 400, third is 500, top of bottom post is 600. -- The exception for your caliber is with the 175gr load and then you use the same marks as the standard calibers. With the 140gr & 160gr loads you use the magnum version. These are for factory loads and are not exact, but for your caliber they show to be within 2-3 inches + or - at the indicated hash marks with the following sight in heights at 100yds : 140gr = +1.3" -- 160 gr = +1.5" and 175gr = 0.0"(dead on zero). -- Good Luck.........[8D] 0 -
to expand on temblor's explanation,.I will say this,...
one thing will always hold true,..you have to shoot it to know. Find the most accurate factory ammo or handload,..then zero at 100yds. Now,..take the hash marks and fire at targets located at the ranges which coincide with the directions for each hash mark. You will know now just exactly how high or low your gun prints it's group at the distances for which each hash mark is designated,..and you can adjust accordingly. I would almost bet they aren't "dead nuts". We were running 165gr NBT's through a 300win mag using RL19 and a balistic plex black diamond scope,...and we found the marks to be off considerably. Test,..test,...and test again until you know how to hold over or under with each mark at the designated distance for each.
other than that,..you will be pleased with the burris product. We have 6 of them between several of us,...and they flat out perform!!
why chase the game when the bullet can get em from here?....

Just a little adder to JustC, you must shoot your rig.
Ballistics tables, which there are really only four (4) "trajectory families" for all modern day cartridges, are very accurate, follow the Laws of Physics, and are not variable in themselves.
The variables are, cartridge, ammo, gun, correct scope adjustment, mounting system, maintenance, and last but certainly not the least is the trigger squeezer, which usually likes to blame the rest of the variables for poor performance.
