I believe it was originally a 142 gr, but most milsurp loadings encountered are now 148 gr.

The original 7.62x54R was adopted in 1891 for the Model 1891 Mosin Nagant. A 150 grain spitzer bullet was adopted in 1909.

The Soviet Union later loaded what was called a heavy ball load. It was about 174 grains. Soviet military heavy ball ammunition can be identified by the yellow painted point.

Ballistically, the 7.62x54R is on a par with the 30-06 but cannot handle the heavier bullets as well due to the limited space in the Mosin Nagant magizine.

    A fine cartridge and rifle!

As mentioned, the 147 grainer is the most common but I've had the best luck accuracy-wise from the 174 graqin pill in my 91, 91/30 and M44. When reloading I've had surprisingly good luck with Hornadys 123 grainer! This 310 bullet seems to be much better suited to the slightly larger bore of the Moisins; i.e., 308's don't seem to work too well!

nobody realy has tried it yet I think but you could get .30 caliber sabots and push .223 bullets down those barrels at 4,000+ fps.

Red...That would be interestingand I suppose recoil would be reduced making the Md38 a lot more pleasant to shoot. The M44 is a bit more pleasant to shoot than the Md38 because of the added weight of the bayonet and attachment regardless of bullet weight. I'm not too sure if this answeres the gentlemans question or not...but interesting none the less!
