Remington Percussion Info Needed
Does any one have any info about this rifle? It is a Remington percussion in what looks to be fair condition. My cousin recently acquired it, and would like to know its background and value. The lock and metal, is tight although a light rust is on it. The bore looks about .75 inch and is smooth and clean. The stock is in fair condition and Remington, 1865, Ilion NY is stamped on side of lock. There is a small compartment under nipple with a cover. Maybe to hold caps? Any info would be appreciated. It would be best if you could provide us with quality pictures and the dimensions ( barrel length. overall length and bore diameter ) of the Remington?
Your discription of the "small compartment under nipple with cover" describes, the "Maynard Conversion", primer locks and percussion bolsters, that Remington provided to the U S military in the 1850's. The conversion of the flintlock muskets were actually done in the US Frankfort Arsenal in Philadelphia.
If it's still in factory original condition, good ( antique ) or better, it MIGHT be worth a fair amount of money.0 -
Looks like you got a winner there! From the picture it appears to be one of the Model 1816 Flintlock Muskets, ( .69 Caliber ) converted by Frankfort Arsenal in the 1850's, to a Maynard Conversion Rifle with Remington made parts.
If the bore hasn't been reamed out smooth, and still has it's original rifleing it APPEARS original, as much as I'm able to tell by a photograph.
I envy your cousin, he has a lot of wonderfull history there! Depending on the finish and cosmetics ( DONT REMOVE THE RUST, UNLESS YOU HAVE A PROFESSIONAL RESTORER DO IT ). It's probably worth at least $1000 ( Barrel still rifled ).0 -
