The statistics on sanity are that one out of every four Americans is suffering from some form of mental illness. Think of your three best friends. If they're okay, then it's you.

    redice:

Please keep me posted on how efficiently your $350 new-in-box flintlock rifle fuctions. I recently bought a Lyman Great Plains Rifle .50-caliber flintlock. It's been back at Lyman for replacement/repair longer than it was in my possession.

The reason I suspect you will be buying "oats that have been cycled through the horse" rather than oats is that flintlocks require more careful assembly for correct functioning. And quality of parts need be somewhat higher than for percussion caplocks. What I'm suggesting is that Lyman, for example, may offer a satisfactory GPR percussion lock. But when the percussion lock was adapted [backwards] to flint ignition, its cheap design could not be overcome.

In the case of the GPR, I have a friend who bought the same flintlock rifle, but as a kit. He replaced Lyman's flintlock with a replacement lock from L&R. His rifle is nice and works well. But the lock is an extra $100+ dollars. And his fit and finishing is not done to a fixed dollar amount. So the unsatisfactory rifle I bought for $355 delivered to mmy door, he did right for about $600-700 in time and parts.

Were you to find a half-way decent rifle new-in-box for $350, count on investing the equivalent of about the same amount in Do-It-Yourself work and parts.

Of course, you could try to locate a used first-class rifle. This kind've takes the anger from the purchase if you choose well.

But, please, keep us posted on what you buy and howit works.
