Colt 45 SAA question

I have a friend that has a Colt 45 SAA with matching serial numbers. It has the eagle grips, and is marked Pat Sept 19, 1871 July 2, 72 Jan 19, 75. It has a 4-3/4 inch barrel. I am not a collector, but I would have to say that the condition is good to excellent considering its age. I can supply digital photos if anyone is interested in helping determine this items worth. He recently took it to a local gun show in Oklahoma City and collectors were crawling all over him offering him up to $2500 and he felt then he had something but was unsure of its value. All feedback greatly appreciated.

    As a follow up, after reading the grading method, I believe this piece would fall in the very good to fine classification. The serial number is 146311.

    Tell your friend not to even think of selling it for that price!

    Serial # 146311 indicates that it was manufactured in 1892. This is a 1st Generation (blackpowder) SAA, and is potentially quite valuable.

    It really should have a "hands-on" evaluation by a Colt expert, but even a Standard run-of-the-mill Civilian production model in just "Good" condition is valued at $10,000 (2003 Standard Catalog of Firearms). Other factors (rare caliber, etc.) may make it even more valuable. It really requires expert evaluation.

    Your friend may also want to invest in a Colt Archive Letter: http://www.colt.com/CMCI/historical.asp .......a little pricey, but it will add to the value of the gun.

    But, I repeat....DO NOT sell this gun until it's had an expert evaluation!

    I agree with Xracer. btw Xracer, did you see the pics?
    I did and although I am no expert I have to agree with his grading of Very Good/Fine.
    This is a beautiful piece and just screams for a Colt Letter and a Kopec authentication.

    I agree with Xracer & sosftim. Get a professional appraisal! Though there are many true SAA experts, Mr. Kopec is probably at the top of the list.

    Thanks for your input. I will advise him to contact John Kopec as well as obtaining the Colt Archive letter. You people are great. He had this thing just sitting around the house collecting dust, not in a safe or nothing.
