Sight Blackened

Anyone use a can of sight blackener sprayed on their sights to reduce glare? I usually use a lighter, but before I go spraying "paint" on my guns....does it come off?

    I bought a can and tried it and it did come off, when I decided to keep using the Bic.

    When I was shooting hipower, 1958-1981, the standard blackener was a carbide light. A handier and just as effective blackening device was an aluminum 35mm file can. You just punch a tiny hole in the top, put a small amount of carbide in the can, spit in it, put the lid on and apply flame at the pinhole. It would last long enough to blacken sights on two or three rifles. Does anyone know if carbide is still used for sight blackening?

    Well...I still use it. In my mind you you can't get a better flat black. Beach

    Paper Match does nicely.Just hold the match flame just below (not touching)the sight.



    1-Powder

    2-Patch

    3-Ball

    4-Remove the Rod

    5-Do Not Forget the Cap.

    Carbide is the way to go . Champions Choice sells a very small unit at Camp Perry & in their store the spray paint does come off but it builds up. Cheers Karl

    carbide lamp smoke. bar none. love that smell! dont stare at the flame. it will leave you with a blind spot for about 5 minutes. dont forget to loosen the cannister top so it doesnt go 'pop' in your bag.
