What is Ideal varmint 243 bullet

Just purchased a Rem 700 youth .243 for my 11 yr old and want to start him shooting super long range ( mounted a 15-45 50mm scope and tripod) he's very excited to get going with Dad.

We want to reload but dont have the varmint load experience..........what is the most accurate ideal varmint bullet weight and type that is recommended for long range shooting 200-350 yds. I also don't know much about "ideal" bullet match to the 243 and I'm assuming lighter is better ...am I wrong? Any other load tips aside from recommended bullet weight would be appreciated.

    OK, let me preface this by saying that I don't own a .243, but I do own a 6mm Remington which is a stretched .243. The optimum weight will depend a lot on the twist of the rifling. If it has a 1 in 10" twist you will probably get best accuracy at 200-300yds with 75-80 grain pills but will shoot better groups at 300+ with pills in the 80-100gr range. I use 80's out to 400yds and 100's past that, but every gun will show a preference for a certain load or bullet.

    Strictly ground hogs (we call them up here) I guess they call them prairie dogs in the good ol' USA. they're about 2-5 lbs average 4lbs.

    My brother is having good luck with 55 grain .243 loads. He's using Winchester Varmint Ballistic Silvertips. He's been shooting Coyotes and Prairie Dogs with it, puts Coyotes down quick and is very explosive on the Prairie Dogs. He said longest shot so far is 350 yards on a Coyote, instant kill.

    I've had good luck with Hornady v-max and Nosler ballistic tip bullets.I usually shoot the 55gr NBT or the 58gr v-max for ground squirrels and have taken coyotes with them also. Very accurate for 250+ yds. For the long ranges The heavier 70gr NBT and 65gr v-max seem to be better(especially in the wind).All four bullets load well with Hodgden Varget powder with close to or at maximum powder charges. Data available in Nosler Fifth Edition Manual and Hornady Fifth Edition Manual. -- If you want factory ammo the Hornady V-Max factory stuff is excellent in an accurate gun..........good luck........[8D]

    i always liked the FEDERAL .243 WINCHESTER 70 GRAIN PREMIUM SPEER TNT HOLLOWPOINT round. 3400 FPS at the muzzle, down 2.3" at 200 yds. it realy does a number on varmints and small game. we used a NEF / MARLIN single shot break open heavy BBL rifle with a simmons 3-9x50mm scope with great results at 200 yds. best regards, mike.

    i would probably have to say use a bullet in the 70-80 grain catagorie in should buck the wind pretty good . the nosler ballistic tips , hornaday v-max , or the speer tnt hollowpoint should do you fine also .

    I have always had good accuracy with Winchester ballistic silvertips 55 grains. Also with Hornady's V-Max. Try a few different ones and see what your gun shoots best.
