Springfield M1A
are these rifles really worth the price? someone mentioned a problem with extracting cases earlier, i have seen this problem on another M1A, but it would easily extract, you just had to do it manually, the rifle was essentially brand new. on anther M1A i saw recently, it looked like the rounds were being fed too "high' they would run into the top of the receiver and hold the bolt open, i think it was factory 175gr or something like that. do these rifles just require alot of fine tuning? or are they very sensitive to ammo? or.....are they just junk?.... i dont think i have any use for a rifle that is that sensitive.

anyone have any thoughts of the M1A supermatch as a long range precision rifle? what about the caliber? 7.62x51. what about a scope?, should i go with the fixed 10x like the USMC M40A3 uses? or something else? 0 -
They are used regularly and the NATO 7.62x51 (.308) in Match loadings is more than up to the task.
Scope wise a 10x will do it, but a little more magnification won't hurt.
As for the scope mount don't use the Mickey Mouse single screw mount, use the G3.

They are really EXCELLENT rifles but for ultra long range work I feel a bolt-gun is the way to go; more consistant shot to shot as there is little variance in the lock-up. At 100-300 yds. a 10,000th makes very little difference but at 1000 yds+ it begins to creep into contention! Still have to say the M1A Supermatch is an AWESOME gun and I would LOVE to have one! Whatever magnification scope you use (and I think the 10 would be sufficient) just make sure it's a fixed magnification!

I had a Super Match and ended up trading it in on a custom M1A with dual lugged reciever,Kreiger stainless and mcmillian stock. the Super match was not so super had to send it back for excesive headspace. never did shoot much better than 1 moa. Check around in the local High Power clubs there are often custom guns as the one I have with less than a three on the throat guage for under $1,500. not to mention you'd probably get to shoot it before you bought it. good to about 800 yds. I think the hot loads needed to get out to a thousand just beats the gun too much. Blew the bottom of the bolt out of one on a warm day in Colony P.A with 180's over 2520. [B)] I have a Pentax 6-24 30 mm on mine but have not yet got to tune the combo, looking to do some long range varmitin this summer, I'd have to give the thumbs down on the Springfield. [:(] 0
