Hoppes is the name must go to for gun oil, as a Hoppes Gun and Reel Silicone cloth can be found in or near most gun collector's work benches.

As for grease, I use so little, that I have little experience on it. I have only recently begun using it lightly on the rails.

I have, however, heard the same thing from people who have been shooting for decades re: oil & grease.

In closing, generally greasing the rails might be more of a competition-shooters routine, just an such a shooter might have more experience in absorbing the fractional minutiae of a handgun's cycling.

I received their free samples a while back. I like the militech grease (I use a very small amount in critical areas), but only use the the oil (a small amount) on the bushing area of my 1911s. I understand it is an outstanding lubricant, but lacks as a long-term preservative. For all other areas, I use FP-10.

You may try a search on the 1911forum (.com) or ar15 (.com) in the maintenance/cleaning forums for more info on militech products. The shooters on these foruns have done some in-depth testing on various cleaning products.

I have used Miltec for about 6 years now, purchased several gallons of it for my agency. An outstanding lubricant, one of the best I have ever seen or used. However, it is not the best rust preventative as fourdees says. For a carry gun that is well maintained it works great. If it is going to be storred for a long time, you would need to use a long term perservative.

thanks for the info, think i'll try it

it's not the type of gun you have in the heat of a battle that counts, only if you have enough ammo for it, lets face it, a gun without ammo is only as good as a base ball bat!!
