Can the chamber of a Savage model 24 chambered for .222 remington be modified to shoot .223 remington, and would it be safe to do so?

  I have a savage Model 24 22 mag over 410. I cant seem to find a selector switch any where, I have tried numrich and brownells as well as our local gunsmiths. This model is designated 24, no letter after it and I dont believe it is all to old. The old switch I believe was w round button type by what I have seen at gun shows and is on the right side of the action. Any help would be greatly appreciated, Thanks

  I think that just about all the shotgun barrels on the 24's are modified chokes. They sell around here for $200-300. More if they are a fancy wood, engraved, or 410.
