Ruger .45 P-97 help needed
Hey. Was wondering if anyone out there owns a Ruger P-97 or basically any of the P series with adj. sites? I have a laser bore sighter that has confirmed the way it's shooting which is to the right and I'm trying to adjust the rear sight on it by loosening the set screw. The problem is, the set screw is in there so tight that it won't even budge. I've attempted many times to loosen it and haven't been able to. I'm to the point of maximum frustration right now because I just broke the allen wrench trying to move it. Do they come from the factory with the extra strong lok tite on them or what? It's got to be it. If so, how do you go about loosening it? I think it's rediculous that you get something with adj. sites and then they lok tite it down so you can't budge it. Please help.

Put an allen socket in the screw and tap it firmly with a hammer, that should loosen the grip of the threads. A little PB Blaster might not hurt either

Sure your trying to turn it the correct way? I have 2 P series and have never had a problem adjusting the rear sight, even when they were new. My 2 cents

I currently have the P90 and formerly owned a original P85 and have never had a problem adjusting the sights on either gun. Ruger will correct it as a last resort as long as the alan head isn't stripped. If it is, they may charge a small fee and you may be better off going to a local smith. 0 -
I would try heating the head of the screw with an electric soldering iron. I find that this will generally break them loose. 0 -
I just loosened mine to make sure it wasn't more complicated than it looked and it loosened easy[:I]

Hey. I heated it and I still couldn't get it to budge. I tried going both ways with it and it's just as tight. I don't know what's going on but I'm going to check with a local gun shop today. I'll post the result on here later if anyone is curious. thanks 0 -
Yes,please post the results,as I've never broken an allen wrench on my life.Hard to believe either the wrench or screwhead didn't round off first.

Took the gun into the shop today. Had the owner, a customer and a gunsmith look at it in there. I did buy this gun new in November 02 so nobody did anything to it and I haven't either. Yes, it is hard to believe that the allen wrench broke but you are only talking a 5/32" size so you don't have a lot of steel to work with when it's twisting around. The shop owner tapped it with a hammer, I've heated it and he couldn't get it to budge. After all the pressure, it still isn't rounded so it must be a pretty high quality set screw in there. The gunsmith said he couldn't do much more than I could for it which would be breaking it so I should send it to Ruger and they'd probably fix if for free because it will probably need to be broken to get it out of there. Ruger's only open Mon.-Fri. so nobody was home. Very frustrating ordeal. Was hoping someone had run into this but I guess I'm the lucky one. Nothing you can do. Thanks for the info everyone. HOW FAR RIGHT ARE WE TALKING , YOU MAY BE ABLE TO DRIFT THE BLADE SOME WITHOUT LOOSENING SCREW . TRY MOVING BLADE IN BOTH DIRECTIONS FIRST AND THEN TRY YOUR SET SCREW . THE ONLY GOOD THING ABOUT ALAN HEADS IS THEY COME WITH A PILOT HOLE . REMOVE THE SLIDE AND USE A GOOD BIT IN A DRILL PRESS WITH THE SLIDE IN A VISE .THAT MAY ALLOW YOU TO REMOVE THE BLADE AND THEN WHATS LEFT OF THE SET SRCEW.
