I've seen some of the older ones, and they're not great. Can't comment on the newer variety.

I'd recommend saving your pennies for a bit more and step up in quality to a Kimber or SA.

For Xracer: Thanks for the information. What do you think of Colts? My dad is a die hard Colt fan. I seem to recall some negative comments about Colts and he seems to think you can get a new one, base model, for around $500. I really like the look and feel of the Dan Wesson .45's. I shot a Kimber and loved it. But, it was a little out of my price range. I will probalby follow your advice and just wait until I spring for a good one.

A new Colt would be a good choice. I'd stay away from ones made in the early '90's....they had some quality issues, but the new ones are fine guns.....however, I haven't seen any new ones for anywhere near $500.

I've heard some very good things about the Dan Wesson, but don't have any first hand experience with the DW 1911. They sure made some nice revolvers, though.

I've owned an Auto Ordnance .45 for 16 years. It is very well made, accurate, and dependable. At first there were a few feeding problems with a failure to feed, however that corrected itself after firing it for awhile. I frequently carry this gun (I have a CCW) and I would not risk my life or the lives of my family on an unreliable gun.

Mine sucks, and is no comparison to my Colt Gold cup.

I have four 45's to include the Auto Ordance, and I can say that it is the most accurate of all the 45's I own. I have done some custom work to it, (stocks, trigger, hammer, and grip saftey), and all of that has made it better. It is still my favorite 45, and I shoot a lot!

The AO guns were roughly machined and finished; some of them "shot themselves in," and of course they could be smithed into better shape. Kahr has upgraded quality control and I would not be afraid of the line anymore if the price was right. There are plenty of alternatives though and I wouldn't go to an Auto-Ord unless I got a Kahr-made one dirt cheap, or unless they started marketing the "Pit Bull" again.

I have owned a AO .45 for 6 years and it works perfectly.
I did wear the ejector out on it one time and had to replace it but that is like any other gun, you shoot any gun enough times and you will have to rplace something.
I carry my AO all the time.
