THIS IS AS IT SHOULD BE, SAME AS A 98 MAUSER. IF THE BOLT ISN'T CLOSED ALL THE WAY THE FIRING PIN CANN'T GO ALL THE WAY FORWARD AND FIRE THE SHELL. IT MAY FORCE THE BOLT CLOSED BUT THIS WILL TAKE UP SO MUCH OF THE MAIN SPRINGS ENERGY IT WILL NOT FIRE.

Most of the CMP rifles have replacement stocks, & there were several different types & manufacturers of these stocks. Be sure that there is sufficient clearance so that the bolt handle is not binding on the cut in the stock.

Thanks Neal for the info. Yes the bolt is all the way home but it seems that the slightest amount of pressure on the bolt handle is enough to allow firing. I will try Mike Wiskey's suggestion and let you both know the results. I also bought an 03 for my son and they are real great rifles to shoot and very accurate with an old Marine behind the sights.
