regarding performance and reliability. would there be a great difference between the 228 and the 226?

Welcome to the forum.... No, they are the same gun, the only difference is the 228 is smaller version of the 226.

Like Laredo said they are pretty much the same gun except for size so reliability should be the same. the 228 might not be as accurate due to the shorter barrel but the difference would probably be very small. I've shot the 226 before and it is a really nice gun and very accurate.
