25-06 case forming

Have access to large quanity of once fired commercial 30-06 & 270 cases and have been reforming to 25-06. Run the 06 cases thru a 270 size die and then 25-06 size die and then trim to length, if necessary, and they work perfectly. The 270 cases I just run thru the 25-06 size die and then trim as they are all way to long. The 270 cases will not allow the bolt to close. I mic each case for overall length after trimming and they are all 2.486+-.001. What am I doing wrong? Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

    Because of the chamber differences of the 25.06/30.06 vs the 270 which is slightly longer (approx. .050") in the throat the 270 cases don't reform to the .06 chamber dimensions well. They don't resize to the wildcat 6.5.06 well either. Neither do the 280 Remington cases which has a slightly improved shoulder. Just stick to using the 30.06/6.5.06/25.06 family of brass together and keep the 270 & 280 separate and you'll probably have no problems.-- Had a friend once who had the throat lengthened in his 6.5.06 so he could use 270 brass in it, but it's easier and cheaper to just use the 30.06/25.06 brass for it.........good luck.......[8D]

    No offense, but I think that you mean the 'neck' not the throat.

    This goes back to the "wildcatting" problems of the 50's and early 60's. When you neck down from .30 to .25 the brass thickness in the case neck has to go somewhere. What you usually end up with is a case with a too thick neck wall, especially if you have a tight chamber in the 25/06 to start with. These you will have to inside or outside neck ream, or toss aside. It might help if you would neck size only on the .30 to .270 pass and not full length size until the 25-06 pass. Even then they probaly won't be a perfect fit until they are fire-formed the first time. There is a procedure for doing this but it would take a lot more space than we have here to fully explain. Your best bet would be to sell the 30/06 brass and buy 25/06 brass with what you get from that sell. Just my 2 cents-its your call. By the way, all 4(25/06, 270, 280 & 30/06) have different neck lengths but can be formed from the same basic case.

    Unless you have more time than most of us it would be better to move the 06 and 270 brass and get new 25/06 cases. You will end up with thick, out of round necks and also will need to anneal the finished neck/shoulder area. I've made several different case conversions and would estimate an investment of at least 5-6 minutes per case start to finish.

    turn the necks and trim the cases,..you can use any of that brass and acheive great results and concentric cases.

    why chase the game when the bullet can get em from here?....

    If you can find some "Lake City 68" 30-06 brass and simply run it through your 25-06 dies and then check the necks(turn if needed) you will have some exceptional 25-06 brass!!! Other than that, ain't worth the trouble!!! GHD.....pastor at the church of GHD.25-06)
