Steel Shot
I have a Western Field 12 gauge pump chambered for 3" magnum is it safe to use steel shot in it??? A visit to the local walMart found only steel in the larger shot sizes.

did you check all of the chokes tubes? the reason I ask is my Benelli MI came with 5 choke tubes some of which where marked for steel and some where just for lead 0 -
Sorry, it was too early in the morning for me to be posting. I checked my owners manual a moment ago, after I read your message, and it said I could use steel shot in the improved cylinder and one other. I'm looking for a turkey choke to use steel shot with, that's why I asked the experts[:D]...lol. By the way, it's still too early in the morning for me to be on the internet, no tellin what I might say. 0 -
Rule of thumb, Steel uses 2 sizes "more open" than lead. IC lead = Mod/IM Steel, Mod lead = Full steel.
Shot size also has a effect, with the larger sizes patterning tighter with the same amount of choke
Some guys like a mag full of lead, I still prefer one round to the head.0 -
I highly recommend that you consider using Remingtons "Hevy Shot" for turkey. Turkey tubes are available specifically for "Hevy Shot" and it will give you a clear advantage in killing range. However, "Hevy Shot" is not cheap but its worth the extra.

I bought some Winchester copper coated heavy load shells for it. The dealer said that's what he uses in his. If you can't tell, this is my first turkey gun and turkey season..lol. I've got some steel shot at home and I'm gonna pattern both this evening using the factory chokes for the steel and the turkey choke for the copper coated ones. Maybe next year I won't have so many freakin questions...lol. Thanks for the input, any other advice yall might have is very very very much welcomed. 0 -
your nova will do very well with steel shot.have fun and enjoy.mine is a 24 inch model and will 'knock you socks off" with a w 3&1/2 inch turkey load.
I WOULD RATHER BE DUCK HUNTING.0 -
You ain't even lying...smooth knocked me off balance yesterday on my first shot. I shoot a magnum load in my muzzleloader and it kicked harder than that. Needless to say after shooting the 3-1/2 loads 3 times my shoulder was bruised and numb...lol. Patterns very nicely though with the beretta choke that I got with it. I won't even hesitate to take a turkey at 50 yards with this thing...well, unless I think of how hard it's gonna kick..lol. I wish I could find some info on the choke, it didn't have the constriction noted on the tube or the package. Just said Beretta External Optima Plus Esterni. 0
