Ported barrels

Hi, reading some of the discussions, there has been reference made to ported barrels being "loud". I am wanting to purchase a rifle that is ported. I have never had any experience with the ported type and am looking for input. I have hunted extensively (deer/moose) with my 12 gauge Mossberg 835 Ulti-mag. In noise ratio, what can I expect to encounter with a ported 444 over my 12 gauge (using slugs and buckshot). I usually use the Federal Barnes Expander for slug and
    3 1/2" 000 buckshot. Thanks.

Most "porting" jobs create vents to the side and top of the last 4" of barrel, which diverts gases created by ignition of the powder.
The enhanced noise is like standing next to the muzzle of someone firing whatever you're shooting. Regular barrels will direct the noise downrange.

If you know it all; you must have been listening.<br>WEAR EAR PROTECTION!

you must ask yourself why you want a gun with a ported bbl? if you cant justify the need, it will just be a waste. if sound is of no consequence, then it wont matter. but ported guns are loud....and hard to clean!

My 338 is Magna-Ported and I don't notice any extra noise, but that might be because I've been around it for so long.

A suggestion ... buy the rifle un-ported and it the recoil proves to be too unplesant then get it ported.

I have a Marlin 444. I have also shot a Timberwolf (Winchester) ported 444 . The difference in sound is very apparent. The 444 is LOUD. The ported 444 is LOUD and UNPLEASANT. Like the others have said, the need for a ported model has to overcome all the other disadvantages. After some experience with one, I don't think I would ever need one that bad.

If the recoil to too harsh for you, port it. Always wear ear plugs when at the range or practicing. When you are hunting, don't wear muffs, you will only shoot once or twice, and the open terrain and excitement of the hunt will not let you notice the little bitty noise!!

Thank you all. I have purchased my 444 on the weekend. Un-ported of course. Experienced versus the "good idea" always wins. thanks again.
