The New Service Colt did come in .357 Magnum cal but I don't believe this is one that came in that cal. The New Service pictured in the 1940 colt catalog had the late type cylinder release, not the one show on this pistol. The pistol at auction also has non-original S & W rear sight.
It is a very reworked gun. I think it has the original frame and probably all else are replacements.

these are quite common. when the .357 MAGNUM cartridge was introduced, many people admired the guns chambered for .357, but could not afford them, and did not want to give up the guns they were already familiar with.

COLT offered a factory conversion deal for a few years. COLT owners could return there gun and have a new, .357 magnum BBL (correct BBL adress and manufacture) put on at a very reasonable price.

we recently sold a NEW SERVICE model of the army 1917 marked in this configuration. i have handled a few in the last couple of years, all nearly identical.

i am told that this conversion was very popular in the southwest among ranchers, farmers, and lawmen.

the above was related to me by a nationaly recognized author and COLT collector. best regards, mike.
