Remington pump/Rifle

Ok a remington pump rifle ? 270 over a 30-06 For a all around shooter ? Deer to coyote shooting.

    I've owned several 30-06 Remingtons. A 760 and a 7600 (carbine) in 30-06. Quite frankly, I was unimpressed with either. I talked to a Remington rep. and told him after building dozens of loads, I was still shooting 1" groups at 100 yards. His reply was that was all Remington ever intended them to shoot. My bolt rifles, all shot so much better at 100 yards that I let both of the pump guns go. Some of the old timers that I hunted with called the 760/7600 two piece guns, and said I should never have expected bolt gun accuracy from them. All in all, I think they were right. If your asking 30-06 vs .270; I'd have to recommend Jack O'Connor's .270.

    I too would go with the 270...and this is from one who has shot a lot of 30-06 rounds out of a 760 carbine. Recoil is something that has to be dealt with when shooting that caliber. The 270 should kick a bit less.

    Slowpitch, salvage3 offers good advice; the .270 is more than adequate for your purposes. If you can get one that shoots as bad as drewto's "only 1 inch" at 100 yards kiss it and dare anyone to touch it. My 50 year old 760 30-06 might not shoot groups as well as drewto's but the bullets always seem to hit where the crosshairs are.I shoot 165 grain bullets over a case full (58 grains ??) of 4350 and it is a powerful load. As far as the rifle is concerned, the 760/7600 are good, reliable hunting rifles.

    The chamber on the barrels of Remington 30-06's is huge. Getting any accuracy with store bought ammo is not going to cut it. Shoot the store bought ammo in that gun, reload it without resizing the case and your accuracy will improve as the case has expanded to that chamber and will improve accuracy.

    I thought I had a bad barrel with a worn chamber, bought a new one and it had the same dang chamber dimensions. Reload for these 30-6 guns if you want accuracy.

    I've got a Remington 760 in 6mm that was made well, now she's a tack driver that will take store bought ammo and shoot well.
