pump shotgun wont pump

i have a pump shotgun that wont pump unless i push the little lever to alow you to pump loaded or empty saftey on or offf it wont pump unless i pust that lever
what might be the propble any help will be great

  I believe the "button" you're talking about is the slide lock. For whatever reason the slide lock is not unlocking when the hammer falls.
  What particular make and model would help a little bit to tell you what to look for.
