I have a 1981 Colt catalog showing a 22 & 22WMR Python.
Does anyone know if these were ever actually made?
Thanks.

This is my 1970 Python. Pretty sure the grips on yours would be identical with the semi-circle checkering below the emblem. I have a 1963 4" that has the same grips. I could take better pictures if you would like.

Sweet gun MANDERSON. I lust over the box especially, as my box doesn't match serial numbers...
Searching around on the net this morning I found these described as Old Colt Python Grips (Colt factory)...still no definitive year...what about these?

I've been getting a little confused about the checkering on Pythons. The early first production definitely had full checkering on the whole stock. I thought that as of a certain year they had a change in design and started the semi-circle stop in the checkering below the emblem as in the picture above. Then around 1973 or 1974 they started with the checkering stopped in a straight line below the emblem.
However, I have seen some pictures of more recent snubby 2-1/2 inchers (well past 1960) that still had the full checkered stocks. I am wondering if they started making this change to only 4" and 6" barrels. I need to do some investigating to be 100% certain, but I am pretty sure that your original grips would have been like the above picture.
Did you buy this from a Gunbroker auction and was it advertised as a 1962 without the original grips? If so, I think I may remember seeing the ad. If it is the one I saw, it was an excellent purchase. That gun was in very good shape. Pretty much like new.0 -
mateomasfeo...just to further your lustful desires:
I have five Pythons, all have original boxes with matching serial numbers in mint condition except for one.
My 1974, which is identical to yours has no box and a few slight imperfections. I use it as my shooter, and it really is a great shooter as you are well aware.0 -
I have a dealer in Pennsylvania that specializes in Pythons and Diamondbacks. Can't get him on the phone this morning. He is probably away with family for Easter. I will call him as soon as I can and he will verify for certain which type of stocks your 1962 should have. Will be posting back with the info in a couple of days. 0 -
Thanks!
This is now officially a quest....

I think manderson has it right. The earliest Pythons had full checkered grips. The semi circle around the colt was next (as shown), then a straight cut line of checkering below the emblem in the 70s. Then the synthetic grips came along in the late 80s. All tehse were the large target style grips.
Those small grips were only on the 2 1/2 inch barrelled Pythons as far as I've ever known.
So our concensus is that you're looking for the same ones on manderson's Python here.0
