height of rings on savage 99
I bought an older 99 .300 (which I physically do not yet have) and was going to put a scope on it using with buehler base and rings. I assume from the sloping butt stock that low rings would be the best idea. Anyone with experience have an opinion?

They make special rings for the gun. One is shorter than the other one. 0 -

A couple of questions: Is your Savage and older model that has not been drilled and tapped for a scope base? If not, and with condition,
I would not install a scope mount that requires drilling and tapping.
There are alternatives, if this is the case-Stith made no drill mounts
for the Savage-you use existing screw holes. Available NIB but discontinued for years-less than one hundred bucks-available in 1" and
7/8". Buehler made and is still in business: Tel. No. (925) 254-3201
the best rings and bases I have ever used. They sport my old pre 64
Model 70's. You may wish to telephone them. As you physically do not have the rifle yet, I would wait prior to using any scope mount and rings. The Buehler rings have laminations inside that you remove to acheive a perfect ring to scope attachment. Tedious but superior mounting-in my opinion. I have a 99 F, made in 1925, TakeDown-.300
but will never fire the rifle as it has a NIB condition.
My hunting partner for nearly twenty years uses a 99 in .300 and finally went to a scope. You may add a lace on cheak pad to bring the

It is already drilled and tapped, and I found an older buehler 99 base on ebay without rings. The gun has a recoil pad, which I assume was done for the length of pull rather than actual recoil. Since I plan to have my 12 year old daughter use it, my thought is to remove the shotgun-style pad and put a thinner, solid rubber pad on it so keep it shorter.
I was wondering about needing a lace on cheekpiece given the slope of the comb, is that what your friend had to do?0 -

My partner did not use a lace on cheakpiece but I found
his rifle very uncomfortable to fire. Once the scope and
rifle come together, your daughter will be the deciding factor.
