I dont think there will be a problem if you keep the Barrel lenth at the legal limit.

OK her is what I know, If you purchased it using a C&R liecense don`t do it, if your purchased it just at a gun show or through a dealer without a C&R liecense I think your OK.

its not considered within the realm of the permitt of the C&R license, its a altered weapon at that point and from what I understand will make it illgal at that point, the law is not spcific in this area and Its up to whoever wants to make the news that day if your legall anymore.

Heck, if buying with the C&R license (I doubt it) really is part of the problem, just "sell" it to someone else (FFL holder, friend, etc) then "buy" it back.

What I got from the NLC in Atlanta (wanted to do a similar thing to my Yugo) was that if you remove one thing you have to remove them all- grenade launcher, bayo/lug, night sights. Then you have to have at least ten American-made parts on it.

Anything you do that alters it from its "original military configuration" removes its C&R status, but the above makes it a legal import.

BTW, you measure barrel length from the breechface, with the bolt locked into battery.

There is no legal problem with the modifications that you want to make.

Yes, the changes will take it out of the C&R category. That only means that, when you dispose of it, it must be transferred as if it were a non-C&R.

The advice that rocklobster got from ATF applies only to the assembly of semiautomatic rifles & shotguns (See 27CFR178.39). You don't have to worry about the number of imported parts, as you have a legally imported complete rifle.

Personally, I see no benefit in shortening the barrel of an SKS. If you do, you will lose the threads. While removing the launcher & sights will remove unnecessary weight, it won't be easy; you'd better be comfortable with your Dremel tool.

You know, that's funny- I called them again after I read your posts, and got an even more different story. I've got a feeling that the opinions of the various agents may have something to do with what they tell you.

Wag - I think I know what's tripping people up here.

First, I agree it only falls out of C&R. It must be in it's original configuration. You'd have to sell it like any normal firearm or restore it.

Second, what I was referring to before and what confuses most people are the two subsections of section 922 of 18 USC. One has to do with the 'evil features', the other with import and assembly of banned weapons.

Keeping the stock mag will save you from the 'assault weapon' evil feature thing, but there are SKS's that have been banned from import. If any of your alterations makes the rifle similar to any of the banned imports, you'd be in violation. You can get around that by making sure you have a certain number US made parts, and it's a specific parts list too.

Try a search on the sections I mentioned, good luck. Also, you can always ask Mark Christian.
