Hello Wagion...
The only bullet weight that can be compared is 180 gr. which is the lightest available for the 44 Mag. and was available in the .357 Maxim. If you load a 180 gr. bullet in a standard .357 mag, you will have to carefully watch the seating depth.
With 180 gr. loads, the 44 Mag will seriously out perform the .357 Mag. I load 180 gr. Sierra JHPs with 32 grains of WW296 (for hunting), and they chronograph at 2050 fps out of my Ruger Super Redhawk (9 1/2" barrel). I would be shocked if you could get 1200 fps with a 180 gr. bullet in a .357 Mag.

.44mag
Current .44 Magnum factory listing include a 240-gr. lead bullet at
1350 fps, yielding 970 ft-lbs. of energy from a 4" barrel.
.357mag
Current .357 Magnum factory listings include a 158-gr.
bullet at 1235 fps with 535 ft-lbs. of energy, at the
muzzle of a 4" barrel.
thats all the ballistics i have on the two, i do have more history/info if needed.
I've always followed my father's advice: he told me, first to always keep my word and, second, to never insult anybody unintentionally. If I insult you, you can be damn sure I intend to. And, third, he told me not to go around looking for trouble.

Even if you could get bullets in equal weight, unless you load down the 44 Mag. there is no comparison, and if you lighten the 44 Mag. load then you get into 44 special country and the performance of the two rounds then get close to one another from short barreled revolvers.

If you are making these comparisons look at the 10mm. My 2 cents [8D]

there is no comparison between these 2 rounds. you can't even come close to 44mag performance with a 357 unless you shoot the 357 from a rifle and the 44 from a pistol.

And ... the 44 mag stats would be higher if an 8 inch barrel were used.
They just aren't equivalent.
