Baker Batavia Leader
I have a Baker Double barrel 16 gauge damascus barrelled Batavia Leader shotgun. I took it to a show this past weekend and had a bunch of lookers. I've heard some Damascus guns were tested with loads that would allow shooting with smokeless powder loads. A couple people indicated that they would have no reservations about shooting light field loads in my gun and I know it had been done by the former owners son in the past. Any thoughts on how safe this would be or any proof marks that I should look for? Thanks!

There are no nitro proofs. The barrels weren't designed for smokeless loads. Pressure curves are totally different between black and smokeless. Tubes are now a century old.
That being said... Go ahead and shoot all the smokeless loads you feel like. Just let me know where you'll be doing this so I can be somewhere else.
Perhaps the best news I can give is that damascus tubes don't usually suffer a burst in the way we tend to imagine. Most times they just start to delaminate without taking part of your hand or face.
