Win Mod 70 low serial

I know it is not pre 64 but it is in the 60's under 900,000 by a shade. It is chambered in 300 win mag it was cut down and was so short no one was interested I got it for a song added a boyds laminated stock and a Nikon 4 x 16 Buckmaster scope with quick release TC rings. I'm debating whether to hang on to it or sell it. I know it is worth what I have into it but but how much more? Pre 64 brings money but what about pre 70 so to speak. I know it is much better than the Walmart Mod 70 and some of the other new ones around you can just feel it.

    I strongly disagree with you... it is not nearly the rifle that the modern Model 70s are. Your rifle was made during the darkest hours of Winchester's production history, and that fact, along with the fact that it is whacked, and it is a LONG way from being factory original, relegates it to near junk status in my book... sorry for being on the brutal side, but I call them as I see them[B)]. Even if your rifle was a pre-64, it would have lost all of its collector value due to the whacked barrel and replacement stock. True Winchester collectors are a finicky bunch[:0]

    Hey Bert, where did you read in the posting that the barrel was whacked as well as the stock, I just assumed stock cuz he replaced it? Not to agree to dis-agree but Bert is right the quality is just not there. What you have may function just fine and could be somebody's favorite shooter someday but it has no collectibility. Gunrunner by the way did you go with the Boyd's JRS or another model? how was Boyd's to deal with? was it an accurate reproduction of that stock or was there a bunch of fitting to do?     Sorry for the confusion but it was just the stock that was cut and it was fixed with the boyds I could care less about collectability. If your crazy enough to pay 3X the price because it is a pre 64 that is your choice it is not junk as everything has value. I believe according to the book it should be around $375. I was looking for real world opinions that might relate to how someone might approach selling this gun in it's present condition. If anyone would like to regress back to the origin of the topic and pontificate on the subject it would be much appreciated. While were being honest.

    My original appraisal was based on what appeared to be a cut down barrel, so if that is not the case, then I will regress just a bit...

    Whether you choose to believe it or not, the newly manufactured Model 70 rifles are superior to a late 1960s made rifle. Accordingly, your rifle is worth about 50% of what the same rifle would cost new today (I agree with your value estimate). Anything more than that will be a tough sell.

    Now were getting some where I figured that it was a good deal and a good shooter so keep it and use it as it is a fine rifle for the money I have into it and it will serve my purpose. I will actually take this to New Zealand in 2005 for trophy red stag and some goat hunting. Should have no problems taking care of business. Thanks and if we walked wiht 2 left feet there I will appologise for not being more consise in my original post. Thanks

    I misread it as well,but still am not a fan of the early POST 64's. Sounds like a trip to remember!!!I wish you well.
