44 Mag for hunting, what lenght barrell?
I want a 44 Mag to use for deer hunting. I will be putting a scope on it.
What are the recommendations for barrell length in this situation?
Thanks

personally i think the longer the better, the longer the sight radius(?) the more accurate the gun, plus you need to check the laws in the state(s) you plan to hunt in as to the min. length of barrel is legal. dont know what the laws in utah are now but do know that at one time it was a min. of 6 in. among other requirements hope this helps

it's not the type of gun you have in the heat of a battle that counts, only if you have enough ammo for it, lets face it, a gun without ammo is only as good as a base ball bat!!0 -
For hunting I suggest 6 inch as the minimum, and as suggested above check the game regs. where you intend to hunt to make sure that your setup is legal.
Even though you want to put optics on it a 6 inch or longer will give you more weight and therefore make the piece easier to control, and thus faster to get back on target for a follow up shot.

My ruger super redhawk with a 7 1/2 brl. is nice to 100 yrds. It does have a scope on it as well shoots nice 1 1/2- 2 inch groups.
Check your local hunting laws to, we have, I belive a 6" min for pistol hunting.

if you are using a pistol i would go with a barrel that is on the long side of the scale to get the most performance out of the .44mag. most companies that sell .44's have models with 7.5" or 8.5" barrels. 0 -
I have a ruger 44 mag super redhawk with a 9 & 1/2' barrel and does pretty good. It would do better sometimes if I myself did better. I have found out that the lighter the bullet the more accurate I am with the amount of recoil comparing the 180 grain to the 240 grain. The 240 is alot to control with the recoil.[;)]

if you reload, the 44 mag is an awsome and versitle gun. every state has it's own reg.s, barrel length is a personal choice but make sure that your choice is legal. I have 3" to 8 3/8" ,5 of em's all s&w. my personal favorate is a 629 in 5". I cast my own 310 gr. gas check bullet for protection (bear repelant). bottom line, shorter is carryable, longer is shootable. start with the medium 6" as long as it's legal.

no shorter than 6" 0 -
If I were wanting a more accurate .44 Mag I would buy the Thompson Center Contender w/10" barrel.Old Joe (died a while back)used to shoot 1/2" 25 yd.groups with his 240 Gn. reloads with a scope.
