Intermittment failure to eject, Savage 22 pump
http://www.gunbroker.com/auction/ViewItem.asp?Item=15684993
I fired my Wards Westernfield/Savage 22 pump today. It printed a fine group but had an intermittent failure to eject.
It rattles a little if you shake it, so I'm guessing something that's supposed to held in place isn't. A cursory look at the search results for "Savage Arms" was not helpful (56k dial-up operating at 24K is lousy for websurfing). Advice appreciated. (about the rifle, I know what's wrong with my ISP)

Henry;
you say western field by savage, is this wf mod.80/savage mod 29?
you say intermitent, is the empty left in the chamber or is it extracted but not ejected? if it is left in the chamber, have you tried a different brand of ammo?
if my guess on model no. is right, you have a take-down. seperate the two halves and see if anything falls out. (as in broken or loose parts) which half has the rattle? check off these items & repost. we'll lick this yet.

It is a model 80A which I was told was equivalent to Savage model 30. You can see pictures of the actual rifle at the auction link. I tried Remington & CCI LR, Winchester shorts, and some very old Winchester Longs, all of them had the occasional failure to eject, the shorts almost every time. Working the action briskly did not help. The case is extracting, but not ejecting. I disassembled the rifle and removed the bolt. I could not determine how the ejector works at all. My best guess is that something relieves the pressure on the left side extractor spring, allowing the right side to pull the case out, but that's a pretty weak theory, come to think of it. I never claimed to be a machinist.

good morning;
from the limited info. I have here the "western field mod.80a" (by cross ref. in BLUE BOOK) is in fact a savage mod. 29-d1. using gun parts/numrich #25 catalog it agrees, we now need a good schematic/parts breakdown & list for "SAVAGE M29-D1" unfortunately, gun parts/numrich does not list a M29-D1 for savage. can someone with a better library than mine please HELP! savage arms has changed ownership since this gun was made and for liability reasons has divorced themselves. the parts list/breakdown drawing is first, if we can locate one we can probably diagnose your problem. hang on we're not OUT yet.

Henry- If memory serves me right, the firing pin acts as the ejector. At the rearmost travel it protrudes from the bolt and forces the case away from the extractor. Being held by the extractor on one side, the case is forced to cant and eject.This force is not enough to fire a live round. I think the extractor spring may be weak,or dirty, and not firmly holding the case when it hits the pin.

Bingo on the mechanism. With the bolt in my hand, I put a snap cap in and pushed the firing pin and away it flew. The extractor springs seem to be ok but when looked at the receiver I discovered that the area that the firing pin contacts in the stock portion is worn and slightly indented and appears to have been brazed once before. Thanks for helping me figure this out. With just a wee bit of gunsmithing I have a dandy rifle to pass on to a young shooter.
