Crosshair, I have an Aimpoint on my MKI. People who have never shot a gun before end up bouncing beer cans with the first clip. Thinking about replacing it with a Pro-Point with the bigger lense.

I have a Tasco Pro-Point pdp2 with a 5 minute dot on my Ruger 22/45 and it is a good combination. I see these currently in the $70 to $100 range. I have a B-Square mount on mine. I have also used a 1 power pistol scope in a similar set-up. The Pro-Point is a better choice in lower light level situations.

Those little Ruger Mk.I and Mk.II pistols are seriously accurate having a fixed barrel. I have a 1X Tasco on mine. When I use my little Ramline plastic squeezeclip bipod (cut down), I'm not opposed to taking shots out to 100 yards with the rig. I sure like the vertical crosshair for gauging windage and elevation---I don't think you could get the same optical information using a single aimpoint.
Standard or hi-velocity .22 rimfire ammo are not that flat-shooting, and on those long shots, a hefty amount of elevation is required. Sometimes I wished I had purchased a scope with graduated marks on the vertical, but after putting several thousand rounds through it, you get to know how much elevation you need.
Also, for a kid, it's not a good idea to present them with a bunch of different sight-pictures. If he uses a crosshair scope on his rifle, I'd stick with it on his pistol.

Red dots are good scopes, especially for "older" eyes that struggle with iron sights. However for squirrel hunting your dealing with a small target and you have to be careful which red dot you select. Above is mentioned a scope w/ a 5 MOA dot, which means 5 inch diameter at 100 yards so at 50 yards your talking a 2 1/2 diameter dot, that covers a lot of area on a small target like a squirrel.

Generally speaking a low power pistol scope may be better for the type of hunting your talking about. There are some 1 1/4 - 4 variable pistol scopes that could work well. As for fixed power scopes, 4x and above are to darn hard to work with, the least little movement and you get distracting jitter so 2x is about the best there. However, if you use a variable like the one mentioned, for well rested shots you can run the power up while using the lower settings for general offhand or closer in shooting.

Not knocking the "dots" but if you eat the squirrel you need to be precise with the shot placement and the red dots make doing this more difficult on small game. Least ways that's my thoughts on the matter.

If you only have time to do two things so-so, or one thing well ... do the one thing!

PDP2 is my choice for silhouette matches atop my KMKGC678; the dot can be set so that you can see through it to the target, it's very accurate at 100yds, windage/elevation shouldn't matter much if you keep your shots under 100yds for squirrels (must be some mighty tall trees!), since most match grade ammo won't drop more than 3 inches in that distance with a solid 50yd zero. Just remember to set the scope upright, and not canted 90 degrees or you'll have as much fun zeroing as I did!
Try to stay away from the Simmons small tubes and the BSA red dots; some last a few rounds, and some don't.

If you know it all; you must have been listening.<br>WEAR EAR PROTECTION!

On a pistol for squirrls I would not use a red dot scope. Red dots have no magnification. A squirrl might be hard to sight in without magnification. I would go with about a 2x of 4x at the most. However a red dot is great for a handgun. Once you use one for hunting you wont go back to conventional scopes. No magnification lets you acquire your target immediately. Also I would look into a red dot that lets you choose different redicles with a turn of a dial. There are several different red dot scopes out there that are quality. Only thing that I would recommend is a large objective.

sp306, are you a politition. heavens knows you skirted around that one like a demacrat. first you said you would'nt because of lack of magnification, then you said if you use one you'll never go back because of the magnification!!!!! (maybe i missed something)

it's not the type of gun you have in the heat of a battle that counts, only if you have enough ammo for it, lets face it, a gun without ammo is only as good as a base ball bat!!
