1903 remington?
I picked up a 1903 remington at sale it isn't original but looks to be worth the 125 I spent. it has a parkerized barrel a redish finnish on the bolt and reciever is drilled and tapped has a monty carlo stock with the black caps and hand checkering .The stock is also glass bedded.
the only numbers on it are on the reciever, barrel, and bolt which is marked on the reciever REMINGTON
1903
3211XXX
on the barrel is marked S C
AN IMIGE OF A BALL WITH FIRE ON TOP
11 43
and REM8620 ON THE BOLT HANDLE
There looks to be a hole in the reciever about one inch from the front. It looks factory made. Is this bad?
Any info would be apreciated Thanks in advance 2gun.
There also apears to be some deep pitting on the bottom of the reciever it is only visable after the stock is removed .Could this gun be unsafe because of the pitting?
IT "S better to die by fire then serve by force
It's not gun control. It's personal defense elimination. They only want to control ours.

You have a Remington US M1903 rifle; they were made 1941-1943. It originally had all Remington parts, so the Smith Corona barrel makes it obvious that it has been rebuilt. The gas relief hole on the left side of the receiver is normal. The markings on the bolt handle were added by Bubba, or possibly some foreign military arsenal.
Pitting on a thin, stressed area of the receiver could be a problem. If you are concerned, you should have it checked by a gunsmith.
It's worth what you paid for it, maybe a little more, assuming that the barrel is not excessively worn.

Thanks Nmyers The rifleing looks good the bore is real shiny after a good cleanning.the flowing looked green ? It took 3 or four patches to get on to come out clean. the barrel has a resesed crown and is parkarised. Also The butt plate has FAJEN on it?

Just a few more questions .
1.what does the on off tab on the left side do besides release the bolt when open half way?
2. does any one make a detachable clip and floor plate combo for the 03?
3.How would I know if this was a copy ?Where there copies?
The reasion I ask this is because 1. I only paid 125 for it .2 the red lacur on the reciever and the bolt and 3.the barrel looks new inside and out?I know it was probably factory parkarized but that was at least 60 years ago. I can see all four groves all the way from the breach to the crown and it looks shiny and crisp! How can this be in a 60 year old barrel?
4.Any one have a non-military type scope mount on a 03 ?Is the rear top of the reciever level with the front top?

The tab on the left side is a magazine cutoff. In one position it cuts off the feeding of rounds from the magazine, allowing the soldier to load & fire single rounds while keeping the rounds in the magazine in reserve. If attacked, he would move the cutoff to the other position to permit rapid fire. Such was "trench warfare" in the beginning of the 20th century.
A small number of rifles were converted by the Army to use a modified BAR magazine for aerial warfare, but they didn't work well. There is no current conversion.
Not sure what you mean by "copy". If the receiver is stamped 1903 Remington, it most likely IS a 1903 Remington. 60 years is nothing in the life of a gun; I have seen guns 150-200 years old that looked new. Stored properly, they should last for many centuries. I don't know what the red substance on your rifle is, but it didn't come from the factory that way; it will probably come off with acetone.
Several companies make scope bases that are designed to fit your rifle. Take it to a gunsmith, as the receiver must be drilled & tapped for screw holes.

Nmyery Thanks for the info.
It's already drilled and tapped. It came with a set of off set two piece base. larger in the front. I just want to make sure they will set the scope level to the receiver.
The bolt handle looks different from most I've seen. It's more curvy also the safety is long a curvy?

Probably had some customizing done as the bolt and safety you describe and not mil-spec.
If in doubt about the scope mounts as your leveling the scope to the bore, have a smith check it out for you. Of course you can just mount a scope and fire it ... and if the sight-in is problematic then get it checked ... just make sure everything is tight and that the scope your using is a known good scope.
Now the good news ... if your stock is in good condition it is probably worth almost what you paid for the rifle. Fajen stocks are high end items.
If you only have time to do two things so-so, or one thing well ... do the one thing!0 -
When a scope is mounted on most military boltaction rifles, the orininal bolt and usually the saftey has to be changed. The original bolt would hit the scope, and the saftey would as well. Gunsmiths install a scope saftey, and cut off the original bolt and weld on a curved handle. Sometimes the original can be bent -but either method is necessary for scope clearence.

The bolt handle from a 1903A4 rifle is already curved; that may be what you have. The safety may work without your being able to flip it over to the other side completely.
In any case, you need a combination of bolt handle, scope rings, scope mounts, & scope that will work together. That is why you would do well to go to a gunsmith to buy all parts & installation. You may easily spend more on the scope & installation that the rifle is worth.

After doing a bit or research .I found out the 1903A3A4 had the same saftey and bolt they where sold for as little a $8.00 a few years ago.I 'll bet that's where it came from. The safety is almost at a 9:00 position and only moves about an inch to a 10:30 position.I mounted a pair of weaver high see through rings and a leupold vx1 3x9x40 scope it has about an inch clearance with the bolt up.The saftey is easy to actuate as it is to the side and doesn't get in the way.I think I'll likely change the base and rings to leupold as I found a base listed for the 03 in the Cabelas shooting catalog
