I had it done to a Remington 700, years ago, it functioned fine.

The only problem was the slower twist of the 222 barrel, it didn't stabilize the heavier bullet weights well. Also the military 5.56 x 45 ball varied in accuracy substantially, depending upon the manufacturer/arsenal.

The 223 was a development from the 222 so as one would assume there are alot of similarities between the two rouonds. The 223 has a much longer case body and will thus accept more powderthan will the 222. Since it will accept more powder it will of course launch the pill at substantially higher velocities. Rufe has it nailed in terms of the barrel twist...unless you rebarrel you will run into the probem of the 1:14 twist rate normal for a222. The 223 , while it uses the same bore diameter has a twist rate of anywhere between 1:7" and 1:12". As with almost all rifles, the heavier the bullet, the higher the twist rate must be to properly stabilize the bullet. You can rechamber safely from 222 to 223 but your bullet selection will be limited to 45 or 50 grainers at the heaviest! Todays modern 223's with a 1:7" twist can launch 70+ grain pills with perfect stabilization. A matter of choice...if you do not mind sticking to the lighter bullets you will be fine!

I had it done to a Savage O/U in 20 ga. about 15-years ago. The scatter bbl is 3" so it made a neat little turkey gun. I've never shot it at a hundred yards, but for it's purpose I'm pleased with it.
