Year my Mod 10 was made
Why does it seem impossible to find a list of number-series to year- made lists on the S&W Model 10 online? I can find these for every firearm I own except my S&W. On top of this, the S&W corporate e-mail account for Q&A's never works, as all my inquiries to this address (qa@smith-wesson.com) are returned as undeliverable. Of course, S&W offers a so-called extensive history on your particular firearm for about $30.00. I only want to know what year it was made. If one of y'all could just tell me what year my pistol was made (Mod 10 .38 Spl, #C8677xx), I'd be grateful. If someone could explain why Smith and Wesson seems so screwy these days, I'd be intrigued!!! Hope to hear from y'all.

Your model 10 was made in 1966 or 1967. 0 -
I certainly appreciate the reply. I know that the first time it was fired was in 1996 when I received it from a family collection. Thanks! 0 -
I believe mine is a model 10 but it has no model # on it.
Prt dates of 1901, 1901, 1908?, 1908? & 1914.
Serial # 3177XX. Would this be a model 10 & approx date please?
My grandmother gave it to me several years after my grandfather died.0 -
BTW, S&W has a toll-free # 1-800-331-0852. Probably 8-5, M-FRI,; on some of the older guns(@'50's), you may even talk to Roy Jinks. Listen to the prompts and get customer service first, and they give it out on the phone for free. If some one wants the paperwork stating the date of mfg., I guess they would charge for that, but if you are selling a gun, for example , let the next guy pay for it. 0 -
Gruntled; try calling S&W on Mon. and see if you get Roy 0 -
Gruntled,
It would be a pre-Model 10 (38 Hand Special Hand Ejector M&P)
and the date range per the Std. Catalog is 1915-1942 for s/n range 241704-700000 so with the number you gave I'd say 1916-1918.
Also, you can call S&W and ask them for the DoM, you can get a S&W letter for $30 and I've heard they also will do something called a "short letter" for which I've heard there is no charge, but I've no experience w/ them. In fact my last factory letter was several years ago when they were charging like $20.
If you only have time to do two things so-so, or one thing well ... do the one thing!0 -
Thanks. I was looking at pictures & they all had two screws on the right side plate & mine has four & mine also doesn't have the S&W symbol or the made in USA lines.
I knew grandpa had it back in the thirties but this makes it much older than that. He liked to tell the story of when he asked a cop for directions & the cop said he was going that way & asked for a ride. He got in the truck & sat on whatever grandpa had laid over the pistol, gave a little surprised look & said nothing. Wonder how that would go down today?0
