Reloading the 22 hornet M6 Scout
I just picked up a new 22 hornet M-6 Scout. Is the barrel .223 or .224 . Can I load either diameter bullet?

Bore diameter of almost all hornets made since the end of WWII are of the .224 type. It used to be .223 when introduced in the early 1930's but was change to .224 later when other centerfire 22 caliber rifles came on line. The .223 semi round nosed "Hornet" bullets are good when using older rifles, especially bolt guns because of the easier feed into the tight chamber mouth out of a magazine. The two pills interchange in any vintage/type of Hornet without difficulty; you might find your rifle has a preference for one or the other though and the only way to find out is trial and error. Most major manufacturers make pills of both sizes and youu should be able to experiment easily. Note also that the newer production Hornet brass is a bit thicker and holds a little less powder than cases made befor about 1955 so watch your loading manuals carefully so as not to overfill and compress your charge. This is a thin, delicate case either way and susceptible to crushing when seating a bullet so you might want to use a neck expander to make the bullet seat easier. Also when using the thin jacketed bullets you should for a Hornet, if your powder charge is near the neck, the seater cup will have a tendency to deform the tip of the bullet...not helpful for stellar accuracy. Make sure your powder charge is not too high so as to avoid deformation! I really like IMR 4227 for this round and feel it is an excellent choice. AA 2015 is a good one too but a bit bulky. Have fun and enjoy this excellent round!
