Class III (To Anybody With an MP5K)
I am very seriously considering having a registered MP5K-PDW transferred to me, but I'm a tad *hesitant* about forking over the $13,000+ dollars. If I fully soup it up and add a scope to it, what will be the maximum range I can expect to hit a target? I mainly want it for recreational target shooting, and an enhancement to my gun collection. Also, if I shoot it a lot, do I have to worry about wearing it out? I hate the thought of wearing out a $13,000 gun.
Also, if I have the MP5K or the PDW variant, would I be allowed to convert it between the two (adding or removing the stock and threaded barrel?)

Hate to burst your bubble, but a 9mm is a 9mm no matter what it costs to shoot. Try blowing $100 on a Hi-Point carbine to get an idea what the rounds' capability is in a longer barreled gun; then if you really have to have one, buy the PDW. I'm under the impression that if you already have the vertical grip installed that removing it and adding a stock wouldn't violate anything, but you might get into trouble the other way around-check with your Dealer.

man i could fill a couple safes with $13k. are you looking to adopt a 21 yr old? i work hard and dont eat a lot[:D] 0 -
The PDW is designed for exactly that: Personal Defense. It is worthless for target shooting and of limited use for just about anything I could ever think of back when I was an HK LE dealer. The short barrel really limits range and accuracy and mounting a scope on the weapon does nothing much besides giving you a better view of a distant target which you won't be hitting! If this is a registered sear gun you can add whatever grips, stocks, or barrels you wish. IF YOU REMOVE THE SEAR you must remove any other items from the firearm which make it either an unregisterd National Firearms Act weapon or an assault weapon under the 1994 Crime Bill. It is your own money but I can think of LOTS of better uses for $13,000 then to spend it on a PDW. After you come to grips with the weapons limitations I doubt that you will ever go to the effort to shoot the PDW enough to wear it out. These are my own opinions and others may find these little PDWs more to their liking than I do.

Personally I couldn't justify a registered receiver PDW ... To me the "reasonable" thing to do would be to just buy a registered sear or sear pack ... registered in 9mm, 223 & 308 for $4000-$6000 ... then if you wanted to buy a SP89($3K-$35K), SBR an HK94 ($3K-$35K + $200 tax) ... HK93($2K) and a HK91($2K) and shoot any one of them in full auto by just switching the sear ... Then for 13K you could have a couple nice toys, but as Mark said, when you remove the sear, you would have to make sure your weapon isn't in violation of any NFA laws.
BTW ... To answer you question:
"what will be the maximum range I can expect to hit a target?"
The MP5K PDW is pretty much a spray and pray weapon ... the sear won't make any gun good for "target shooting" ... full auto is for dumping large quantities of lead in the general vicinity of a target.
